Job Description and DutiesAn exciting position working in the San Francisco Estuary on some of the longest-running fish monitoring surveys in the State of California! This position is located in the California Department of Fish and Wildlife's (CDFW) Stockton, California office. Under the supervision of a Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory), this position provides field, office, and laboratory support for the Bay Delta Region’s Young Fish Investigations Unit, and is primarily responsible for collecting, sorting, and identifying young fish and zooplankton samples generated during long-term ecological monitoring activities Summer Townet Survey (STN) and Fall Midwater Trawl (FMWT).
Sampling aboard research vessels occurs from San Pablo Bay upstream through the Delta. The CDFW is a leader in San Francisco Estuary science, and this position will play an integral role in data gathering. Field samples will be processed according to documented protocols, and organisms are speciated to lowest taxonomic level using best available tools, science, and collaboration.
This position works in both field and laboratory settings. Field sampling season occurs June through December. The position will participate as a crew member on a research vessel sampling fish and zooplankton and aid in the setting and retrieval of nets, recording of environmental and biological variables, and processing of samples in the field. Will also participate in the transport, sorting, processing, and preservation of zooplankton samples in the laboratory.
Candidates can expect an extended training period to build up their expertise.
The Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aid classification is a non-testing classification.
Minimum RequirementsApplicants who receive public assistance under the CalWORKs program shall be given hiring priority consideration as provided in Government Code, Section 19063.
Applicants who receive public assistance need to identify themselves as CalWORKs recipients in the comments section of the STD 678, Examination/Employment Application.
Applicants must submit verification of CalWORKs eligibility, which may include the most recent Notice of Action showing Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) eligibility or a copy of the most recent aid check stub.
Applicants may obtain verification from the CalWORKs program. If CalWORKs verification is not submitted with the application, it will not be processed as CalWORKs eligible.
Participation by a public assistance recipient is voluntary and in no event shall any person be subject to sanctions, through loss of benefits or eligibility, for not applying for, accepting, or continuing in a seasonal or entry level non-testing classification opening.
Working ConditionsUse a computer and/or dissecting microscope for most of the workday, five (5) days a week, in a laboratory setting when in the office. Fieldwork aboard a research vessel under various weather and sea conditions for up to 14 hours a day, several days a month collecting, sorting, and processing biological samples, involving kneeling, reaching, and lifting up to forty (40) lbs.
Involves sitting most of the time in the laboratory and standing most of the time in the field. A valid driver’s license is required to meet the Minimum Qualifications of the position classification, and a valid driver’s license is required by the time of hire. Driving may be for long distances, often in heavy traffic and early in the morning.
Occasional overnight travel may be required to facilitate field work for State business, up to 5%. Wearing a Department of Fish and Wildlife uniform is required as a condition of employment while conducting field work and public work duties.
