Research Scientist
Location: California
Position Overview
We are building next-generation sequencing technologies for routine use, accelerating clinical research, streamlining workflows, and expanding assay menus.
Role & ResponsibilitiesAs a Chemistry & Fluidic Systems Integration Scientist/Engineer, you will translate complex multi-step chemical and molecular biology workflows—such as purification, synthesis, library prep, target enrichment, amplification, and sequencing—onto early-stage microfluidic systems. You will navigate the transition of assays from solution-phase to solid-phase environments, quantify reactions on surfaces, and select, formulate, and optimize buffers, surfactants, coatings, and critical additives. Using statistical methods you will design rigorous experiments to characterize system performance, troubleshoot integrated subsystems, and identify first-principles root causes for leaks, fouling, or null results.
You will serve as a subject-matter expert in molecular biology, sample and library preparation, and sequencing chemistry, communicating complex concepts to engineers and providing data-driven feedback that drives co-development of reagents, consumables, and hardware.
Doctoral, master’s, or bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Molecular Biology, Bioengineering, or Biomedical Engineering, combined with 7-11 years of industry experience. Deep understanding of chemistry and molecular biology fundamentals, experience troubleshooting hardware-integration challenges, and hands-on expertise in nucleic-acid workflows such as library prep, enrichment, amplification, and purification. Proven ability to develop novel assays, evaluate integration performance, and resolve complex inter-disciplinary issues.
Preferred QualificationsRecord of innovation through patents or publications related to nucleic acids, experience writing Python scripts or using fluidic simulation software, statistical design of experiments (DOE) and tools such as JMP or R for system optimization, and strong interpersonal communication skills.
