Position

We are working to make next‑generation sequencing simple and accessible enough for routine use. By accelerating clinical research, streamlining workflows, and expanding assay menus, we are broadening access to genomic data and lowering barriers to adoption. From robust sample isolation and preparation tools to novel sequencing technology and advanced bioinformatics, we are developing differentiated, highly integrated end‑to‑end solutions for next‑generation sequencing, resulting in a sample‑in, result‑out workflow.

Our Systems Technology Group, a part of Roche Sequencing Solutions, is focused on creating and advancing technologies to significantly enhance DNA sequencing workflows.

Responsibilities
  • Prototyping & Fabrication: design, fabricate, and assemble custom devices, fixtures, and breadboards using CNC machining, laser cutting, 3D printing, and advanced shop tools.
  • Microfabrication & Metrology: develop and implement microfabrication processes (photolithography, etching, drilling, bonding, dicing) and use precision metrology instruments to characterize components and evaluate manufacturing methodologies.
  • Workflow Development & Troubleshooting: test, characterize, and troubleshoot complex fluidic systems and devices; develop new workflows, protocols and assays, and collect, analyze, interpret data.
  • Documentation & Reporting: generate comprehensive test plans, experimental protocols, and technical reports.
  • Equipment Maintenance: operate, repair, and maintain lab equipment and custom instrumentation.
  • Collaboration:

    partner with a small, agile team of scientists and engineers and the broader organization.
Qualifications – Required
  • Ph.D. in Bioengineering or a closely related discipline with 2–5 years of research and early development experience in the life science industry.
  • Expertise in library preparation and target enrichment workflows.
  • Proficiency with bioanalytical instruments (qPCR, dPCR, Bioanalyzer/Tape Station, Qubit Fluorometer, Nano Drop UV‑Vis Spectrophotometer).
  • Experience with nucleic acid extraction and purification techniques.
  • Success in building, operating, and troubleshooting hardware, fixtures, breadboards integrated with fluidic, pneumatic, thermal, and optical subsystems.
  • Experience with workflow simulation software and Python scripting for instrument hardware control.
  • Advanced knowledge of microfabrication techniques (lithography, thin‑film deposition, wet etching, glass‑to‑glass bonding).
  • Strong understanding of engineering and chemistry fundamentals.
  • Positive, friendly, proactive attitude and passion for science and technology.
  • Strong desire to learn, be challenged, and proactively challenge the status quo.
  • Ability to collaborate with relevant team members to measure and monitor study progress and communicate issues and strategies.
Preferred
  • Solid publication record, including at least one first‑authored publication.
  • Experience with microscale electrochemistry, electrophoresis, DEP, ECL, or EOF.
  • Experience porting molecular biology assays or workflows onto novel devices.
  • Impeccable technical skills paired with strong organizational, communication, and writing capabilities.
  • Strong desire to learn, be challenged, and proactively challenge the status quo.
Salary & Benefits

Expected salary range for Santa Clara, CA: $87,500 – $162,500. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
