trail monitoring & events intern

green umbrella is seeking a highly motivated, responsible, and enthusiastic undergraduate student, graduate student, or recent graduate to support the work of tri‑state trails as a part‑time trail monitoring intern starting in april 2022.

the internship is paid at $15 /hour for approximately 15‑20 hours per week. The intern will work closely with the gis analyst & planner to assist with our trail monitoring program and support the communication & events manager with events throughout the summer months.

green umbrella leads collaboration, incubates ideas, and catalyzes solutions to create a resilient, sustainable region for all. Tri‑state trails is an alliance of community advocates advancing a vision to connect and expand our region's trail and bikeway network.

about the position

this internship offers a chance to learn about the nonprofit sector and environmental sustainability efforts within the greater cincinnati region, focusing on active transportation, outdoor recreation, and trail/bikeway planning.

required skills and qualifications:

  • basic understanding of arcgis
  • strong work ethic and perseverance to solve problems
  • excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • excel data management skills
  • ability to work independently, outdoors, and with a supervisor
  • access to a vehicle; physically able to work in the field and lift up to 50 pounds
  • willingly work weekends and evenings; ability to transport and ride a bicycle is advantageous
primary responsibilities
  • install and dismantle automated trail counters on trails and on‑road bike lanes around the 10‑county service area every eight days from april through november
  • troubleshoot counting technology in the field
  • collect and manage data from automated trail counters
  • apply quality assurance and quality control measures to counting technology and data to ensure integrity of data collected
  • collect and assemble data for other projects as needed
  • represent tri‑state trails at community events (e.g., staffing a table or booth) on a regular basis
  • enter data into contact databases and online calendar as needed
