Louisiana Department of Public Safety & Corrections – Corrections Services Louisiana State Penitentiary, Angola, LA The Department’s mission is to promote public safety and strengthen communities through fair, professional, and responsive corrections services. This position supports that mission by enforcing the custody and control of inmates in a State penal institution.
Responsibilities- Complete the four‑week Correctional Officer Training Academy.
- Work closely with inmates incarcerated in a state prison facility.
- Primarily responsible for the custody and security of inmates – within facility buildings, prison dorms, workshops, and/or fields.
- Supervise housekeeping of inmate housing areas, escort prisoners, investigate suspicious activities, and conduct in‑depth security searches of inmates’ person, property, living quarters, and work locations.
- Supervise inmate work crews, patrol areas of the prison, and transport inmates as assigned.
- Follow direction given by upper‑level officers, departmental policies, and regulations.
- Receive firearms training.
- High school diploma or GED; or one year of experience in any field.
- Minimum of 18 years of age.
- Possession of a current driver’s license.
- Candidate must not have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, nor be under indictment on a felony charge. All relevant disqualifying conditions are outlined in the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) regulations.
- Applicants must be available for 24‑hour facility work and may be required to work shift schedules.
- Initial placement as a Corrections Cadet (or Corrections Sergeant with qualifying experience).
- Eligible for reallocation up one pay level to Corrections Sergeant after 6 months of successful employment.
- Eligible for reallocation up two pay levels to Corrections Sergeant‑Master after one year of successful employment.
- With 2 years of experience and permanent status, eligible to apply for promotion to Corrections Lieutenant.
- Defined benefit pension plan.
