HVAC Technician – Distribution (Job Description)

We are looking for an HVAC Technician for distribution facilities that supports the installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems within warehouses, distribution, retail stores and cold storage environments. This role ensures optimal climate control, energy efficiency, and reliable operation to protect products and maintain employee comfort.

Key Responsibilities:

System installation and commissioning :

- Install and wire HVAC equipment, controls, and thermal management systems for new distribution facilities or retrofits.

- Assist with ductwork, piping, refrigerant charging, and system balancing.

- Commission systems to meet design specifications, energy codes, and manufacturer guidelines.

Preventive and corrective maintenance:

- Perform routine inspections, lubrication, filter changes, belt replacements, and coil cleanings.

- Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and control faults on rooftop units (RTUs), air handling units (AHUs), chillers, boilers, heat pumps, and glycol systems.

- Maintain accurate work orders, service logs, and equipment history.

Controls and energy efficiency

- Troubleshoot Building Management System (BMS) or direct digital control (DDC) interfaces and sensors.

- Optimize setpoints, schedules, and sequencing to improve energy performance.

- Implement weather normalization and free-cooling strategies where applicable.

Refrigeration and cold storage rooms(where applicable)

- Service low/high-temperature refrigeration systems, and cold rooms.

- Manage refrigerant handling, leak detection, and recovery in compliance with regulations.

Safety, compliance, and documentation

- Adhere to OSHA regulations, lockout/tagout procedures, and site-specific safety protocols.

- Maintain PPE, ladders, fall protection, and portable electrical equipment in good condition.

- Ensure permits, energy codes (e.g., NEC, NFPA, local amendments), and refrigeration service guidelines are followed.

Projects and collaboration

- Coordinate with , electricians, and contractors on system upgrades and space planning.

- Provide accurate estimates, material lists, and timelines for maintenance or retrofit projects.

- Support major renovations.

Team collaboration, communication and quality

- Communicate findings and recommendations clearly to site managers and operations teams.

- Prioritize critical cooling needs during peak operations and high-demand periods.

- Ensure work is performed with minimal disruption to receiving, shipping, and palletizing activities.

Required Qualifications

Licenses & certifications:

- EPA 608 (Type I/II or Universal), relevant state contractor license, and any required refrigerant handling credentials.

- Experience 5-10+ years in HVAC service, with exposure to commercial/industrial environments; distribution or warehouse experience is a plus.

- Proficiency with RTUs, AHUs, boilers, chillers, and variable frequency drives (VFDs).

- Basic electrical knowledge (read schematics, wiring, controllers).

- Familiarity with BMS/DDC systems and building energy management practices.

- Ability to lift heavy components, climb ladders, work in tight crawl spaces, and operate in variable temperatures.

- Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting capabilities under time-sensitive conditio

- Clear written and verbal communication for reports, handoffs, and incident documentation.

Preferred Qualifications

- Certifications in refrigeration (e.g., CTherm or equivalent) or refrigeration safety.

- Experience with ammonia or glycol systems (as applicable to site).

- Lean or maintenance optimization training (5S, TPM, or similar).

- CDL or forklift certification for on-site logistics coordination (optional but beneficial).

Work Environment

- Distribution center/ warehouses, retail stores

- Regular daytime hours with on-call rotations for emergencies; some facilities require after-hours or weekend support.

Travel:
Local to regional travel may be needed; distances vary by employer.

Physical demands:
Moderate to high; includes climbing, bending, and heavy lifting.
