Overview

The Tank (Erection) Fitter/Tacker is responsible for field erecting, fitting, welding, grinding, and inspecting new steel storage tanks, vessels, and structures and for repairing existing steel storage tanks, vessels, and structures. This is a skilled craft role that reports directly to the Superintendent and works closely with erection crews and supervisors.

Responsibilities
  • Pass pre‑employment drug & alcohol screen.
  • Unload fabricated steel products and tools from trucks or rail cars.
  • Operate electric and pneumatic power tools (grinders, wire brushes, chipping guns) and perform basic maintenance on power equipment.
  • Use hand tools such as shovels, brooms, scrapers, hand brushes, files, etc.
  • Move material by hand or with forklift/crane assistance.
  • Align, fit, and tack steel shapes using temporary erection gear, pry bars, and sledgehammers.
  • Erect and dismantle temporary scaffolding used in steel plate construction.
  • Set up, break down, and rig lifting equipment such as mobile cranes and fixed derricks.
  • Set up and use oxy‑fuel or plasma cutting equipment to cut or trim plate and structural steel.
  • Perform welding operations (SMAW, FCAW, SAW) according to approved construction welding procedures.
  • Inspect, set up, use, and rig equipment such as aerial work platforms, elevated platforms, and staging.
  • Lay out and install tank accessories according to drawings and procedures.
Basic Qualifications
  • Basic Carbon Steel SMAW Welding Qualification (Four Plate Test).
  • Skilled in grinding, oxy‑fuel burning, basic fitting, arc gouging, manlift, and scissor lift operations.
  • Experienced with structural erection, fit‑up, tank bottom/lapped plate, tank fittings, and tank shell plate erection.
  • Weld seam grinding and basic knowledge of construction manuals.
  • Ability to read and understand engineering drawings and operation manuals.
  • First‑class knowledge of rigging and lifting tools; able to calculate load weights and inspect rigging gear.
  • Proficient with safety procedures, including fall protection, confined‑space work, and personal protective equipment.
Local Requirements
  • Typically 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • Certification in tacking weld processes.

  • Ability to clearly interpret verbal and written instructions.
