Now Hiring:
Laborer – Underground Utility Construction | Selcon Construction Selcon Construction is hiring Laborers to support underground utility construction crews. This role is hands-on, physical, and outdoors. Laborers will assist Equipment Operators and Foremen with site prep, trenching, excavation support, utility installation, spotting, back filling, cleanup, and general crew support.

This is a traveling role. Candidates must be comfortable working out of town for 2–3 weeks at a time depending on project location and business need.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

None

Key Responsibilities:

Assist with construction site setup, cleanup, barricades, tools, materials, and equipment

Load, unload, organize, and move tools, pipe, conduit, cable, and jobsite materials

Assist with trenching, excavation, back filling, compacting, and general ground support

Spot for equipment operators and help protect existing underground utilities

Assist with placing pipe, conduit, cable, and other underground utility materials

Set up and support trench boxes, shoring, traffic control, and other jobsite safety measures

Operate hand tools, power tools, tampers, jackhammers, and other small equipment as needed

Wash, clean, and help maintain company vehicles, tools, and equipment

Report damaged tools, unsafe conditions, or equipment issues to supervisors

Follow OSHA, DOT, and company safety procedures at all times

Wear required PPE and participate in jobsite safety meetings and hazard assessments

Work closely with crew members, Foremen, Operators, and subcontractors to meet daily production goals

Maintain a clean, organized work area and assist with final site cleanup

Follow directions and communicate clearly with the crew

Required Qualifications:

Valid Driver’s License with clean driving record, Class A CDLPrevious construction, utility, or general labor experience preferred

Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions

Ability to perform physically demanding labor for extended periods of time Ability to follow directions and work independently or as part of a crew

Must be willing and able to travel out of town for 2–3 weeks at a time

Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check

Preferred Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GEDOSHA 10

Experience with trenching, pipe laying, underground utilities, or construction labor

Work Environment:

Outdoor construction work in heat, cold, rain, snow, mud, dust, and other weather conditions

Exposure to loud equipment, moving machinery, open trenches, traffic, insects, and general jobsite hazards

Travel required depending on project location and business need Overtime, weekends, and extended workdays may be required

Physical Requirements:

Perform continuous physical labor for 8–12 hours per day Frequently lift, carry, push, or pull up to 80 lbs. unassisted

Occasionally lift more than 80 lbs. with assistance

Stand, walk, bend, squat, kneel, climb, reach, twist, and work on uneven terrain for most of the workday

Work in trenches, confined areas, and tight work spaces as needed

Climb ladders, steps, or equipment to access work areas

Use hand tools and power tools with control and accuracy

Perform repetitive tasks such as digging, raking, compacting, and material handling

Drive or ride in a vehicle for extended periods when traveling to and from job sites

Must have sufficient vision and hearing to identify hazards, read labels, follow instructions, and recognize alarms or warning signals
