Position Overview
Cooperative Extension – Area Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Advisor for Field and Vegetable Crops (Assistant Rank) serving the San Joaquin Valley. The advisor will implement an innovative, multi‑county extension education and applied research program that addresses insect and mite pest issues affecting field and vegetable crops in Fresno, Kings, Madera, and Tulare counties.
The role involves conducting applied research and extending knowledge to growers and consultants, designing and managing IPM programs, and communicating findings through a variety of channels including farm consultations, workshops, webinars, and publications.
ResponsibilitiesThe advisor will work closely with growers and consultants for field and vegetable crops, providing pest identification guidance, management recommendations, and outreach through workshops, webinars, and written resources.
Key Research Areas- Improving early detection of arthropod pests through monitoring, assessment, and IPM system refinement.
- Responding to endemic and invasive threats by developing immediate and long‑term management programs.
- Evaluating integrated pest management strategies, including biological, cultural, plant resistance, and chemical controls.
- Master’s degree in entomology, pest management, or a closely related field.
- Broad understanding of IPM, crop production, biocontrol, pesticide use, and insect biology.
- Experience designing and implementing programmatic research and extension initiatives.
- Technical competence in experimental techniques.
- Qualified Pesticide Applicator Certificate (QAC) or Qualified Applicators License (QAL).
- Valid California driver’s license and proof of liability/property damage insurance.
- Unrestricted and permanent work authorization in the United States.
- Strong communication skills—written, oral, and digital—capable of tailoring complex information to diverse audiences.
- Collaboration and teamwork with external stakeholders and internal UC ANR staff.
- Commitment to lifelong learning and professional development.
- Successful extension programming and applied research history.
- Deep understanding of cropping systems, weed science, and pest management.
- Bilingual in Spanish or another regionally common language.
Assistant Rank, Step I ($85,600) to Step VI ($108,600). Benefits include health insurance, retirement plans, two days per month paid vacation, one day per month paid sick leave, paid holidays, and eligibility for sabbatical leave.
