Mechanical Foreman
The Mechanical Foreman is responsible for the direct supervision, coordination, and execution of daily activities performed by welders, pipe fitters, and associated craft personnel at an industrial facility. This position ensures all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications, quality standards, and established schedules. The Mechanical Foreman provides leadership in the field, promotes a strong safety culture, and serves as the primary liaison between craft personnel, superintendents, planners, and client representatives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Supervise and coordinate the daily activities of welders, pipe fitters, helpers, and other assigned craft personnel.
- Plan, assign, and monitor work to ensure productivity goals and project schedules are achieved.
- Read and interpret piping isometrics, P&IDs, fabrication drawings, blueprints, and work packages.
- Ensure all welding and piping work complies with project specifications, applicable codes, and quality requirements.
- Conduct daily safety meetings (Toolbox Talks) and ensure compliance with all company and client safety policies.
- Verify employees are utilizing proper PPE and following safe work practices.
- Coordinate manpower, equipment, materials, and tools required to complete assigned work.
- Monitor work progress and adjust labor assignments to maximize productivity.
- Inspect completed work to ensure compliance with quality standards before turnover.
- Coordinate with Quality Control personnel regarding inspections, hydrotesting, weld documentation, and turnover packages.
- Identify and resolve field issues while minimizing schedule impacts.
- Collaborate with planners, schedulers, engineers, and other disciplines to coordinate work activities.
- Ensure permits, lockout/tagout procedures, confined space requirements, and hot work requirements are properly followed.
- Complete daily reports documenting manpower, work completed, equipment usage, delays, and safety observations.
- Mentor and develop craft employees while promoting teamwork and accountability.
- Participate in project planning meetings, pre-job meetings, and client coordination meetings.
- Maintain high housekeeping standards throughout assigned work areas.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- NCCER certification or equivalent craft certification preferred.
- 7–10 years of industrial mechanical construction or maintenance experience.
- Minimum 3–5 years of supervisory or foreman experience leading welders and pipe fitters.
- Experience in refineries, petrochemical plants, chemical facilities, power plants, LNG facilities, or heavy industrial environments preferred.
- Strong knowledge of industrial piping systems, welding processes, fabrication, installation, and maintenance.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, piping specifications, and weld procedures.
- Working knowledge of ASME, API, and applicable industry standards.
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office and electronic timekeeping systems preferred.
- Strong leadership and team management abilities.
- Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Thorough understanding of welding processes, pipe fabrication, installation, and repairs.
- Knowledge of industrial safety regulations including OSHA requirements.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced industrial environment.
- Strong planning, scheduling, and manpower coordination skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with employees, contractors, and clients.
- Ability to identify productivity improvements while maintaining quality and safety standards.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to climb ladders, stairs, and scaffolding.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and work for extended periods.
- Ability to wear required PPE including hard hat, safety glasses, respirator, hearing protection, gloves, and fall protection.
