About CM Fabricating

CM Fabricating is a veteran-owned, owner-operated metal fabrication company serving the Kansas City area. We fabricate and install light structural and miscellaneous steel and also provide in-house CNC cutting and powder coating.

We are a hands-on, no-nonsense company that values craftsmanship, accountability, integrity, and people who take pride in doing the job correctly. Our employees get exposure to both shop fabrication and field installation rather than performing the same repetitive task every day.

Position Overview

We are looking for a dependable Welder/Fabricator who can also assist with steel erection and field installation.

This is not strictly a shop-welding position. The work includes fabrication in our Kansas City shop as well as installation at construction sites throughout the Kansas City metro area. Applicants must be comfortable working outdoors, at heights, and in changing job-site conditions.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Perform MIG/stick welding and fabrication of light structural and miscellaneous steel
  • Read shop drawings, erection plans, dimensions, and weld symbols
  • Lay out, fit, assemble, and weld fabricated steel components
  • Verify measurements, squareness, and fit-up before welding
  • Grind, clean, and prepare completed parts as required
  • Bolt up, weld, and install structural and miscellaneous steel in the field
  • Safely use ladders, lifts, fall-protection equipment, and common fabrication tools
  • Assist with rigging, signaling, material handling, and crane-supported erection
  • Load and unload steel, tools, and job-site equipment
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area
  • Be willing to learn CNC plasma operation, press-brake operation, and powder coating

Qualifications

  • At least one year of welding or metal-fabrication experience preferred
  • Steel erection, construction, or field-installation experience is a plus
  • Ability to produce sound MIG/stick welds in multiple positions
  • Ability to accurately use a tape measure and basic layout tools
  • Ability to read shop drawings or a willingness to learn
  • Comfortable working outdoors and at heights
  • Physically capable of lifting and handling steel, tools, and equipment
  • Reliable transportation to our Kansas City shop and local job sites
  • Dependable attendance and ability to arrive ready to work
  • Positive attitude and willingness to work as part of a crew
  • Commitment to following job-site and shop safety requirements

Pay Level

Starting pay will be based on demonstrated ability—not just years of experience.

The upper end of the pay range is intended for candidates who can independently:

  • Read drawings and complete layout
  • Fit and weld accurately with limited supervision
  • Perform clean, consistent MIG and stick welds in multiple positions
  • Assist with rigging and steel erection
  • Troubleshoot fit-up and field-installation problems
  • Work productively without constant direction

Selected applicants should be prepared to complete a practical weld and fit-up test.

What We Offer

  • Consistent full-time work
  • Shop and field experience
  • Varied fabrication and installation projects
  • Opportunities to learn CNC equipment, press-brake operation, and powder coating
  • Occasional overtime opportunities
  • Room to earn additional responsibility based on performance

CM Fabricating is a veteran-owned, freedom-minded workplace. We value skilled tradespeople who work hard, think for themselves, take responsibility, and stand behind their work.

To apply, submit your work history or résumé and briefly describe:

  • Your welding and fabrication experience
  • Your experience reading shop drawings
  • Any steel erection, rigging, lift, or field-installation experience
  • The hourly pay you are seeking
  • CM Fabricating is an equal opportunity employer.
