Job Description:
The Lead Tool Technician Mechanic serves as an advanced technical authority for Nextracker installation tooling and field tool-support programs. This role leads the planning, deployment, commissioning, troubleshooting, maintenance, and continuous improvement of tooling systems used at customer and construction sites. The position works independently on complex hydraulic, electrical, mechanical, and controls-related issues; translates technical information into practical field solutions; and provides guidance to customers, subcontractors, temporary labor, and internal teams.
The Lead Tool Technician Mechanic is expected to influence safe, reliable, and efficient field execution across multiple sites and to represent Nextracker with a high degree of technical and professional credibility.
- Act as the senior technical resource for Nextracker installation tooling, tool-support workshops, and field deployment activities, resolving complex or unusual equipment issues with limited precedent.
- Plan, schedule, and execute the delivery, setup, commissioning, calibration, relocation, and demobilization of tool-support workshops and related field equipment.
- Diagnose and resolve advanced mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, pneumatic, and controls-related problems using schematics, technical manuals, diagnostic instruments, and structured root-cause analysis.
- Translate tooling schematics, product literature, service documentation, and safe operating procedures into clear field instructions and practical corrective actions.
- Create, review, and maintain Job Hazard Analyses, site-specific safety plans, method statements, equipment inspection records, and other required EH&S documentation.
- Lead field tool-support activities in partnership with owners, customers, subcontractors, construction teams, Field Operations, Engineering, Service, and Nextracker management.
- Forecast tooling demand, construction schedules, site-specific requirements, staffing needs, equipment availability, and documentation priorities with management and cross-functional partners.
- Provide technical leadership, hands-on coaching, and formal training to customers, temporary labor, subcontractors, and internal personnel on tool setup, safe operation, calibration, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and installation best practices.
- Develop and improve preventive-maintenance practices, troubleshooting guides, inspection checklists, training materials, and standard work to improve equipment reliability and customer experience.
- Capture field observations, failure trends, corrective actions, and lessons learned; communicate recommendations to Engineering, Product, Quality, Service, and Operations teams to support product and process improvements.
- Maintain accurate service records, parts usage, tool inventories, calibration records, repair documentation, and customer communication in applicable systems.
- Exercise sound judgment in balancing safety, quality, schedule, customer commitments, and cost when determining the appropriate course of action in the field.
- Promote a culture of safe work practices and ensure activities comply with applicable federal, state, local, customer, and Nextracker EH&S requirements.
- Perform other related duties and travel to customer and construction sites as business needs require.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Technology, Construction Management, Maintenance Technology, or a related technical discipline preferred
- 5+ years of progressively responsible experience supporting installation tooling, construction equipment, industrial equipment, field service, equipment maintenance, or a related technical environment.
- Advanced working knowledge of hydraulic, electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and electro-mechanical systems, including the ability to read and apply schematics and technical documentation.
- Demonstrated experience troubleshooting complex equipment problems, identifying root cause, and implementing safe, durable corrective actions.
- Experience independently leading technical work at active construction, manufacturing, industrial, or customer sites with changing priorities and limited supervision.
- Experience developing or delivering technical training, mentoring less-experienced technicians, and communicating technical information to audiences with varying levels of expertise.
