Job Summary
The Advocate provides direct support and guidance to individuals impacted by interpersonal violence, trauma, or crisis. This role includes serving as a frontline contact for clients and community members, offering practical assistance, safety planning, and resource navigation. Advocates support various service lines including hotline response, shelter support, court accompaniment, and community advocacy, operating in a 24/7 environment under supervision.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Direct Client Services
- Provide crisis intervention, problem-solving, supportive counseling, advocacy, information, referrals, and resource linkage.
- Conduct safety planning and assist clients in identifying immediate and long-term needs.
- Offer support in medical settings, courts, shelters, and community offices.
- Participate in court accompaniment, hospital advocacy, and mobile advocacy as assigned.
- Support clients through case management, individualized goal setting, and service coordination.
- Facilitate or co-facilitate individual or group support sessions as needed.
- Maintain awareness of and respond to emergency and non-emergency client needs in a timely, professional manner.
Documentation
- Accurately document all client interactions in designated case management systems and databases.
- Maintain timely case notes, logs, and reports per agency and funder requirements.
- Participate in data tracking for service delivery, client outcomes, and grant compliance.
Crisis Intervention and Conflict Resolution
- Assess and respond to emergent client needs using de-escalation techniques and risk reduction strategies.
- Collaborate with law enforcement, courts, hospitals, and other service providers to address immediate safety concerns.
- Apply trauma-informed, solution-oriented approaches to crisis management.
Team Collaboration and Organizational Participation
- Attend required supervision, training, and team meetings.
- Participate in peer learning and onboarding of new staff, interns, or volunteers.
- Foster positive working relationships with colleagues and external partners.
- Support agency initiatives, client events, and program development efforts.
Experience and Educational Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree preferred; a minimum of 3 years of direct experience in crisis response, advocacy, or related human services may be substituted for formal education.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong interpersonal communication, problem-solving, and time management skills.
- Ability to remain calm under pressure and respond effectively to high-stress situations.
- Excellent written documentation and verbal reporting skills.
- Capacity to work independently while maintaining accountability to team goals.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and electronic documentation platforms.
Other Requirements
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain an acceptable driving record in accordance with agency policy if driving a company vehicle.
- Must successfully pass a background check.
Environment & Physical Demands
- Frequent interaction with clients and partners in community and facility settings.
- May require travel, including client transportation and offsite accompaniment.
- Requires regular sitting, standing, and walking.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs and occasionally up to 70 lbs with assistance.
- Must be comfortable working in emotionally intense environments and engaging in self-regulation practices.
