POSITION TITLE: Social Worker

REPORTS TO:Assistant Superintendent of Student Services, Lead Counselor/Social Worker and Building Principal

POSITION SUMMARY:Provide support, education, and resource referrals to students and families of children enrolled in the schools. Provide consultation and support to staff providing services to children enrolled in the schools. Perform therapeutic services to individual students and their families to assist with social and emotional concerns related to their educational and social progress.

FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

Essential Functions

  • Provide individual, family or group therapy for children who are experiencing problems in school, home, or community with an emphasis on early intervention.
  • Receive referralsonstudents from staff and provide appropriate services at school and through home visits.
  • Consult with parents, classroom teachers, nurses, counselors, administrators, other school staff and outside agencies.
  • Encourage and assist families in their pursuit of community services that may assist in the remediation presenting problems.
  • Participate as a member of staffings or the IEP team to provide input in developing treatment goals, behavioral interventions, and family support.
  • Provide crisis intervention throughout the district, which is geared towards protecting the safety and emotional well being of students.
  • Work with students and families to alleviate attendance concerns and when necessary make referrals to St. Louis Family Court/Children’s Division.
  • Attend and participate in educational conferences and workshops pertinent to school social work.
  • Provide staff support and education in the area of childhood mental health and human behavior.
  • Participate and network with school based committees and associations and community interagency teams providing services to families and children (e.g. HSD Community Response Team, HSD Health Advisory Committee, Parent Involvement Programs, and School Social Workers of MO).
  • Supervise graduate social work students from local universities and provide LCSW supervision for district employees.
  • Maintain appropriate records.
  • Assist in development or discovery of resources through networking, fundraising, and grant writing.
  • POSITION QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

    Education: Master’s degree in Social Work (LCSW preferred) or Master’s Degree in a related field with LCSW and School Social Work experience.

    Experience:Practicum experience or on-the-job experience in providing social services or counseling assistance to children and their families.

    Skills and Abilities:

    Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents in the facilitation of their well being.

    Possess positive and effective communication skills, written and verbal Apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Deal with problems involving several concrete variables in or from standardized situations.

    Add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure. Perform the operations with like common and decimal fractions. Compute ratio, rate, and percent.

    Perform reading, writing, and speaking at an intermediate level.

    Must possess intellectual, technical and human relations skills needed to work cooperatively with colleagues, parents and community groups in order to accomplish District goals.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, talk, hear, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, and to lift up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required included close vision, distance vision, the ability to adjust and focus, and depth perception. Specific hearing abilities required include normal conversation, phone conversation, and isolating voices in multiple conversations.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT / CONDITIONS:

    Works in a school environment a majority of the time and is required to work outdoors for a small portion of the day.

    EQUIPMENT / TOOLS/ MATERIALS USED:

    Personal computer, copier, fax, 10 key calculator.

    REQUIRED PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT:None

    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:Assigned to190 daywork calendar; 36 hours and 40 minutes; compensation and benefits (Medical, Dental, Vision, Life) as provided by the Board of Education.
