Job Summary

The role of the Middle School Cheerleading Coach is to provide leadership for the OGR6 athletic program through the ongoing development, implementation and improvement of the specific sport coached. This position is responsible for coaching student athletes in game strategies and techniques to prepare them for athletic competitions. The coach motivates student athletes to develop an appreciation of the sport and encourages them to continue to develop their skills and mindset across other sports as well.

Essential Job Functions
  • Coaches individuals in the skills necessary for excellent achievement in the sport involved.
  • Plans and schedules practices in season.
  • Oversees safety conditions of the facility or area in which assigned sport is always conducted, ensuring students are present.
  • Maintains accurate statistics, records, and results of the season.
  • Enforces discipline and sportsmanship, establishes and oversees penalties for breaches of such standards.
  • Maintains competence in rules, rule interpretations, meeting procedures, coaching techniques, and general information about all aspects of the sport.
  • Establishes performance criteria for eligibility in interscholastic competition and applies consistently.
  • Adheres to an efficient injury prevention and follow‑up program.
  • Works closely with the Athletics Director in scheduling intramural and interscholastic contests.
  • Recommends purchase of equipment, supplies, and uniforms.
  • Maintains necessary attendance forms, insurance records, and similar paperwork.
  • Accounts for all equipment or delegates responsibility.
  • Develops a consistent and positive public communication procedure through the school and media to inform parents and the public about the program.
  • Supervises approved fund‑raising projects.
  • Works with Athletic Director to ensure all financial activities are processed through the proper student activity account.
  • Models good sportsmanship behavior and maintains appropriate conduct toward cheerleaders, officials, and spectators.
  • Reports discipline problems and other related concerns of students.
  • Participates in continuous study and research, and/or attends relevant conferences and/or workshops to maintain and enhance professional competence.
  • Provides direction and support to assistant coaches, as appropriate, in developing their coaching skills and activities.
  • Plans, organizes, and directs the development of off‑season activities (e.g., summer training, clinics, etc.).
  • Complies with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rules, MSHSAA rules, and Board of Education policies.
  • Other duties as assigned by the principal or other administrative staff.
Additional Duties
  • Attend staff development meetings, clinics, and other professional activities to improve coaching performance.
  • Maintain appropriate confidentiality.
  • Promote a harassment‑free environment.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships; demonstrate a commitment to teamwork.
  • Learn and upgrade job skills to meet changing demands of the position.
  • React well under pressure, handle and balance multiple demands at one time, work with frequent interruptions, and perform duties at expected professionalism.
  • Use independent judgment and demonstrate initiative to act without being asked.
  • Maintain MSHSAA eligibility and compliance for student athletes/coaches.
