Overview
The City of Mitchell Library is seeking a Circulation Assistant. This position provides assistance to library patrons in the use of library technology and computers, assists at the front desk (checking materials in and out) and performs other general library duties. Schedule includes one mandatory evening per week, alternate Saturdays, and one Sunday per month.
Responsibilities- Assists patrons at the circulation desk; checks materials in and out; places holds on materials; collects monies for copies, faxes, fines, and lost or damaged items; issues library cards; assists patrons in locating materials in the collection.
- Provides assistance to patrons in the use of library technology and computerized databases.
- Prepares overdue notices (where applicable).
- Updates patron accounts (where applicable).
- Resolves circulation problems involving lost, claimed returned, or overdue materials.
- Troubleshoots problems with computer hardware, software, and peripherals.
- Trains and supervises part-time staff, student workers, and volunteers.
- Provides library tours.
- Assists with programming as needed.
- Performs related duties.
- Knowledge of patron services principles.
- Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs and databases.
- Knowledge of money handling principles.
- Knowledge of library materials preparation and maintenance principles.
- Skill in the provision of patron services.
- Skill in the use of modern office equipment.
- Skill in the use of an automated library system.
- Skill in interpersonal relations.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
Starting wage of $21.603 per hour, with excellent benefit package including health and dental insurance, life insurance, vacation and sick leave, and participation in the South Dakota Retirement System.
Requires some specialized training or experience in technology, library, or related field along with minimum high school education. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
