Position
Purpose:
The Middle School Instructional Coach partners with teachers to evaluate student engagement, improve instructional practices, and build teacher capacity. Acting as a partner, the coach helps educators navigate the developmental transitions of the middle years by providing personalized support in pedagogical planning, data analysis, and the implementation of evidence‑based strategies. The position bridges the gap between educational theory and classroom practice through modeling, co‑teaching, and ongoing reflective coaching cycles.
Key Responsibilities- Coaching Cycles:
Utilize structured, goal‑oriented coaching (e.g., identify, learn, improve). Move fluently between directive coaching, cognitive coaching, peer observation, and lesson study based on teacher readiness. - Data‑Informed Instruction:
Guide intervention teams in deconstructing standards, analyzing formative and summative student data, and creating targeted interventions. - Model Lessons & Co‑Teaching:
Roll up sleeves to model best practices directly in the classroom, co‑plan lessons/units and team‑teach to transfer new instructional skills to the teacher. - Professional Development:
Design, facilitate, and deliver on‑going, job‑embedded professional learning opportunities and workshops aligned with school improvement goals. - Curriculum & Resource Support:
Support the implementation of district‑adopted curriculum frameworks and curate developmentally appropriate, research‑based resources that cater to the diverse needs of adolescent learners. - Advocacy & Support:
Serve as an advocate for both teachers and students by ensuring high‑quality instruction. Promote culturally responsive teaching.
- Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Education, Educational Leadership, or other related field. - Certification:
Valid state teaching certificate or licensure. - Experience:
Minimum of 3‑5 years of highly successful classroom teaching experience with a proven track record of student achievement growth. - Coaching Mindset:
Deep understanding of adult learning theory and the ability to listen, provide non‑evaluative feedback, and build trusting, confidential relationships. - Pedagogical Expertise:
Strong knowledge of middle school pedagogy, content‑specific strategies, and the ability to integrate technology meaningfully.
- A measurable increase in student achievement.
- An increase in the retention of probationary teachers (those in their first 3 years of teaching) to the Mitchell Middle School and the teaching profession.
- A positive lift in the teacher‑coach relationships, fostering a growth mindset to aid in both instructional learning and student achievement.
