Position: Special Education Paraprofessional with Bus Aide Responsibilities-Tentative Posting
SPECIAL EDUCATION PARAPROFESSIONAL WITH BUS AIDE RESPONSIBILITIES - 182 Day Contract/8 Hours Per Day

- High School graduate or equivalent (GED) and academic competency in basic skills.
- Minimum of 48 semester hours of study at a regionally accredited institution (

) successfully completed the Alabama State Board of Education approved Work Keys test.
Job Description The job of Special Education Paraprofessional was established to provide support to the instructional program. The paraprofessional is assigned to a specific school and is responsible for supervising and instructing special needs students, observing and documenting student progress, implementing the education plan, and supporting students with special health care needs. The paraprofessional will be assigned to a special needs bus route and assist in designated duties to ensure safety.

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling; some climbing and balancing; considerable stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling/ and significant fine finger dexterity.
Reports To: Principal and Special Education Coordinator
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to support and reinforce classroom objectives.Administers immediate aid and assistance as instructed by a lead teacher (e.g., lifting students, diapering, feeding, etc.) to meet urgent healthcare needs and develop children’s daily living activities and behavioral skills.Applies and removes physical therapy appliances as instructed (e.g., body braces leg braces, etc.) to ensure the student has the proper equipment according to the IEP plan.Assists students by enabling them to access their electronic communicators, switches, pointers, feeders, etc., to ensure equipment is hooked up correctly and functioning properly.Assists students in and out of wheelchairs, loading and unloading on the bus, and transporting students in their wheelchairs in and around the school and on field trips to ensure the students get to and from school and to the proper places safely.Assists with pre-lunch and lunch activities (e.g., heat food, chop food, collect lunch money, feed, etc.) to help the teacher and lunch personnel get the student fed.Attends meetings and in-service presentations (e.g.,first aid, CPR, emergency procedures, behavior management, IEPs, etc.) to acquire and convey information relative to job functionsCommunicates with supervising instructional staff and professional support personnel to assist in evaluating progress and/or implementing IEP objectivesMonitor students during assigned periods within various school environments (e.g., lunch, bus stops, playground, classroom, restroom, field trips, public transportation, assemblies, kitchen, etc.) to maintain a safe and positive learning environment.Participates in implementing IEP goals to meet IEP goals and district benchmarks.Participates in implementing student behavior plans to ensure adequate and safe student learning.Assist in the provision of instruction, under the supervision of the teacher, to the students in a variety of individual and group activities (e.g. academic subjects, social skills, daily living skills, giving oral tests, etc.) for the purpose of reinforcing instructional objectives; implementing IEP plans, and ensuring students’ success in school.Performs other related duties as assigned by the principal or special education director to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.Salary Range
