Overview

Alabama School of Mathematics and Science (ASMS), a public residential high school serving talented students from across the state, seeks an on‑site, full‑time Physics Instructor to teach a full range of classes from core courses such as Introduction to Physics and Honors Physics to electives possibly including Robotics, Aerodynamics, and Flight Studies.

Summary

An instructor is expected to introduce new content material to students in a manner which facilitates comprehension and retention, to help students develop critical thinking and writing skills that are essential to academic success, and to perform all functions with the goal of producing knowledgeable, responsible, open‑minded and public‑spirited citizens.

Requirements

Master’s degree and teaching experience, Ph.D. preferred.

Valid driver’s license with an acceptable motor vehicle driving record.

Role and Responsibilities
  • The expected workday is 6 hours, which includes office hours.
  • Develop and implement a program of instruction that meets the needs of a learning community and is consistent with state guidelines, but attentive to academically talented students.
  • Possess classroom management skills and manage students outside of classrooms and during field trips.
  • Continuously assess student performance and provide timely feedback via test scores, written evaluations, and personal conferences.
  • Collaborate with other school personnel to monitor academic performance and general well‑being of students.
  • Collaborate with other faculty members for curriculum ideas, teaching approaches, and problem‑solving.
  • Maintain student records and retain samples of written work to document progress.
  • Work with the school librarian to provide support services, including supplementary reading materials and audio‑video offerings.
  • Maintain and submit appropriate records and reports.
  • Prepare and distribute a course syllabus for each course in accordance with organizational guidelines.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records.
  • Investigate outside learning resources such as guest speakers and visits to exhibits, museums, collections, etc., to enhance learning.
  • Ensure classroom is attractive, functional, and conducive to learning.
  • Serve as a member of a team and participate in extracurricular activities for the common good of faculty, staff, and student body.
  • Participate in professional growth and development activities, including faculty meetings, in‑service days, and other activities as required.
  • Possess strong knowledge of content, curriculum, instructional methods, materials and equipment, and continually reassess to keep current with new developments in the field.
  • Be organized and prepared for classroom instruction.
  • Be flexible and adapt to changing instructional needs.
  • Be skilled and effective in oral and written communication.
  • Communicate with a diverse population.
  • Handle academically challenged students willingly and communicate with parents and staff to achieve results.
  • Create an interactive classroom environment encouraging participation.
  • Provide instruction in academic research via electronic sources and guide students in writing papers.
  • If teaching a lab, instruct students on lab safety and uphold nationally accepted safety standards.
  • Use appropriate protective equipment for science classes, such as masks, filters, or protective clothing.
  • Challenge students to explore their interests and provide incentives through reading lists, films, events, programs, and other venues.
  • Take attendance and follow up on tardiness and absenteeism.
  • Maintain a professional attitude and promote a positive image of ASMS to the outside community.
  • Be willing to put in extra time as needed to ensure students have the best instruction and resources.
  • Write letters of recommendation for students and perform other professional activities as required.
  • Actively participate in a faculty mentoring program.
  • Implement the policies and procedures of ASMS.
  • Maintain a neat appearance and appropriate dress.
  • Enforce and comply with the policies and procedures of the ASMS Board of Directors.
