Job Description
This position is open to Veterans, transitioning military personnel, National Guard and Reserve members, military spouses, wounded warriors, and their caregivers. The role is "On‑Site" at the location detailed in the posting.
Reports to:
Safety Coordinator, Safety Supervisor.
- Assist the HS&E Department in ensuring compliance with Austal Safety Policies, Austal Fire and Flooding Plan, and applicable corporate, state, and federal regulations.
- Collaborate with employees on safety issues and provide assistance on risk and accident prevention concerns.
- Conduct site and equipment inspections, complete accident investigations, and perform safety inspections.
- Perform safety surveys to identify and evaluate occupational health, safety, and environmental conditions.
- Audit physical conditions and safe work practices during comprehensive on‑site inspections.
- Recommend corrective actions for temporary work stoppages or area closures.
- Provide first‑response medical assistance until the Austal medical team arrives.
- Calibrate, use, and interpret air monitoring equipment.
- Execute monthly inspection programs (fire extinguishers, air monitoring, vehicle checks, eye wash stations) and complete necessary paperwork promptly.
- Extinguish live fires at the incipient stage and respond to small hazardous material spills.
- Work with safety personnel, supervisors, and managers; take direction as required.
- Perform other related duties as assigned, including operating shipboard fire suppression systems.
- Comply with Austal’s employee handbook, company procedures, and policies.
High School/GED.
Qualifications and Experience Required- 1 to 3 years of related EHS experience or a combination of education and experience.
- Prior military, police, or professional fire service experience may be considered in lieu of education.
- Demonstrated knowledge of working standards, concepts, practices, and procedures within health, safety, and environmental fields.
- Basic OSHA safety training certifications in one of the following work groups: 29 CFR 1915, 1910, or 1926.
- Desire and ability to complete OSHA and NFPA training to be recognized as a marine competent person for hot work inspections.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including training, presentations, and report writing.
- Effective collaboration with employees at all organizational levels and a diverse workforce.
- Graduation from a medical first responder course within six months of hire.
- Willingness and ability to work in close and confined spaces.
- Commitment to work any shift, including holidays and on‑call situations.
- Ability to remain calm and in control when faced with confrontational employees.
- Beginner level or higher PC skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Publisher, and Adobe products.
- OSHA Outreach training related to the Shipyard Industry.
- Applicants must be 18 years or older.
- Proof of U.S. Person status required.
- No felony convictions of theft, deception, violent crimes, or drug crimes within specified time frames.
- Willingness to submit to a drug screen and background check.
- High School Diploma/GED or higher education with comparable trade experience.
- Integrated air monitoring equipment, real‑time air monitoring equipment, lanyards, harnesses, LOTO devices, extinguishers.
- GDIS, Navy personnel, Sup Ship, Austal employees, Austal supervisors and foremen, subcontractors, contractors, and other designated parties.
- Regularly stand, walk, manipulate, reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and talk or hear; occasional sitting.
- Ability to bend, squat, stoop, climb, and kneel; perform prolonged standing.
- Turn head and body side to side and around vertical axis.
- Lift/push/pull 50–75 lbs occasionally; 20 lbs frequently.
- Climb stairs, scaffolding, ladders, and ramps; work at heights above 12 feet.
- Work at various levels (waist, eye, overhead); use tools and equipment safely.
- Use personal protective equipment per OSHA standards.
- Withstand cold and hot temperatures; enter small openings and confined spaces for prolonged periods.
- Respond to verbal and audible commands; maintain visual skills; reach overhead, side, down.
- Exposed to humid conditions, flashing lights, moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, outdoor weather, heat, cold, fumes, airborne particles, chemicals, and noise levels typically 90 dB or more.
