Job Description

A Senior Wastewater Operations Traveling Technician (SWOT) will be trained to operate and maintain wastewater plants at several locations around the country. The purpose of the position is to assist with new account startups, temporary operations, and to cover our existing facilities while local operators are out on PTO or sick time. The SWOT will be responsible for the overall operation and maintenance of the wastewater plants they visit, including process changes to meet compliance, troubleshooting processes and equipment, operational management, maintenance (routine, reactive, and preventive), process and compliance sampling, laboratory testing, and writing and distributing a daily shift report.

The SWOT will also assist with the startup of new wastewater operating contracts until full-time local operators are hired and will be responsible for training the newly hired operator(s). The SWOT will communicate with the client and with Veolia's Account Manager regarding the operation during their time at the facility. The SWOT will be required to travel and be away from home for extended periods of time – ranging from 1–2 weeks at a time, up to one or more months for certain projects.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain wastewater plants to comply with discharge permit requirements and each client’s expectations.
  • Provide direction and support to operators on other shifts, delegating tasks based on skills.
  • Conduct lab analysis of waste streams to verify treatment and make process changes.
  • Communicate frequently with the Account Manager regarding plant operations and request assistance.
  • Coordinate own travel plans;
    Veolia pays all related expenses.
  • Write or revise Standard Operating Procedures as necessary.
  • Analyze lab data to uncover potential treatment issues and implement process changes to prevent non‑compliance.
  • Submit daily and/or weekly reports to client and Veolia management regarding plant status and needs.
  • Be flexible with schedule; travel on short notice if emergencies arise.
  • Manage chemical inventories, spare parts inventory, and waste disposal activities.
  • Provide training and facilitate training of operators for all facets of operation and management.
  • Perform all duties in compliance with the site safety plan.
  • Coordinate and assist with major, preventive, and reactive maintenance activities.
  • Optimize wastewater treatment plant operation.
  • Lead by example, work hard, treat each member of the team with respect, and take responsibility for plant performance.
  • Assist Veolia Management with training and development of operators.
  • Be available 24/7 to operators, manager, and client when at a site.
  • Provide direction to the team on daily operation and maintenance to ensure compliance.
  • Stay knowledgeable of client process changes, chemical rates, maintenance activities, and additional sampling/testing.
  • Give clear verbal and written instructions on proper operation and maintenance of equipment.
  • Communicate current status, compliance, treatment issues, maintenance, and personnel issues to Veolia or client management.
  • Make process changes based on lab data and knowledge to correct compliance issues or improve treatment.
  • Evaluate maintenance projects and coordinate outside support as needed.
  • Discuss significant issues with the account manager to ensure actions meet contract requirements.
  • Develop creative and innovative process improvement ideas related to operation/management.
