Responsibilities
- Lead complex design calculations and drawing development for the construction, maintenance, and repair of maritime vessels and shipboard systems, including structural, propulsion, electrical, and hydraulic mechanics.
- Ensure vessel designs comply with relevant regulatory authorities, specifications, and customer requirements.
- Manage design and analysis projects from concept through completion, reviewing drawings for compliance, accuracy, and production feasibility.
- Provide technical support during construction and liaise with production teams.
- Direct and mentor engineers, designers, drafters, consultants, and vendors in developing vessel design information.
- Collaborate with production and project teams to implement vessel and component designs.
- Lead training initiatives and develop the skills of other engineers.
- Follow Austal’s employee handbook general guidelines, company procedures, and policies.
- 5 to 8 years of relevant engineering experience in manufacturing, construction, or shipbuilding (shipbuilding strongly preferred).
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Strong leadership abilities and a commitment to fostering company culture.
- Demonstrated ability to adhere to strict deadlines and scheduling.
- Experience coordinating with production staff, multiple design teams, customer representatives, and equipment manufacturers.
- Proficient in AutoCAD and MS Office products.
- Preferred:
Experience with SAWE Weight Control standards, steel and aluminum ship construction, modular construction methods, maritime regulatory authorities (ABS, NAVSEA, MIL, USCG, IMO, etc.), US Navy vessel design, shock design, and FEA methods (FEMAP/NASTRAN). - Naval Architect:
Bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture or a related engineering discipline. - Thorough knowledge of vessel structural and hull‑form design; vessel trim, stability, and hydrostatic calculations; resistance, propulsion, and seakeeping analysis; weight control; model tank testing experience a plus.
- Must be 18 years of age or older at the time of application.
- Must be a U.S. person and able to provide proof of status.
- Must have no felony convictions of theft, deception, or violent crime within the last seven years.
- Must have no felony convictions of drug crimes within the last three years.
- Willing to submit to a drug screen and background check.
- Possession of or ability to obtain an active DoD clearance may be required.
