Job Summary
Generally responsible for performing all aspects of the complete design of complex civil/structural engineering assignments. Work is performed under general supervision and requires extensive progressive experience in civil/structural engineering, applying advanced engineering techniques and analysis.
Responsibilities- Familiarize with and apply department design and drafting standards.
- Understand project scope, specifications and design criteria upon assignment to a project task team.
- Develop conceptual layouts and cost studies to determine the simplest, most efficient approach.
- Produce estimate‑level preliminary designs and material take‑offs suitable for the project scope.
- Produce detail design calculations and sketches for materials of construction.
- Check calculations made by other engineers for accuracy, code, specification and engineering practice compliance.
- Assist the drafting group in resolving routine layout and detailing problems.
- Prepare sufficient sketches and details necessary for completion of engineering drawings.
- Consult with design leaders from other disciplines to ensure smooth flow of vital information.
- Advise the senior engineer concerning design or scope changes identified.
- Assist other engineers in developing and assembling scopes, drawings and specifications into a “package” to enable purchase inquiries.
- Review and check vendor drawings and other discipline drawings for civil/structural input.
- Develop construction specifications.
- Review fabrication drawings and other construction submittals for conformance to engineering drawings.
- Perform fieldwork to gather field data, check tie‑ins and provide construction support.
- Provide technical guidance to less experienced drafting and engineering personnel.
- Lead small to large size teams, coordinating civil/structural efforts and keeping the team focused on scope, schedule and budget.
- Identify and develop work sharing packages for interoffice execution support.
- Estimate and schedule professional service hours and assess progress and quality of civil/structural work.
- Education: Bachelor or Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited university; structural coursework required for structural engineering positions.
- Registration: Professional Engineering registration is highly preferred.
- Experience: 10+ years of relevant industrial experience in civil/structural engineering.
- Prior Project Management
Experience:
Preferred: experience as a Project Manager on single‑discipline projects or as a CSA lead on major capital projects. - Leadership: Ability to supervise engineering staff on industrial projects ranging from small to large capital size projects.
- Bid Package Review: Ability to assemble and review bid packages for large‑scale civil/structural work scopes.
- Codes & Standards: Familiarity with applicable engineering codes (IBC, AISC, ASCE, ACI, etc.) required.
- Software: Experience with civil/structural analysis software (RISA‑3D & RISA Foundation preferred); proficiency with CAD software and Microsoft Office.
- Design & Quality: Ability to produce estimate‑level preliminary designs, develop conceptual layouts, and apply the quality program for the CSA department.
- Ability to perform field work to gather relevant project data and provide construction support as required.
- Skill to develop detailed sketches necessary for completing engineering drawings.
- Knowledge to check calculations for code and specification conformance and good engineering practice.
Ability to sit, stand, or walk for long periods of time.
