Job Description

System Safety Engineer - Battery will support the MSFC Safety & Mission Assurance Contract in Huntsville, AL. The engineer will support a variety of programs including the Artemis missions and science and technology payloads in system safety with an emphasis on battery safety and compliance.

Responsibilities
  • Develop, maintain, and update safety documentation, including hazard analyses, safety analysis reports, safety procedures, and battery management system (BMS) specifications.
  • Review battery usage in space vehicles and scientific payloads to ensure compliance to NASA and Space Systems Command standards.
  • Assess design and integration of batteries against safety requirements for the specific launch vehicles including new technologies.
  • Perform and support risk assessments and hazard analysis for space flight with emphasis on battery-related analysis.
  • Assess battery vendors for quality processes and equipment performance against requirements.
  • Lead investigations into battery safety incidents, including root cause analysis, and develop reports with recommendations for preventing future occurrences.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Must have US citizenship.
  • Must have a bachelor's or master's degree in materials science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, or a related field.
  • Must have 5+ years of recent and related work experience.
  • In lieu of degree, candidates with 9+ years of recent and related experience will be considered.
  • Understanding of JSC 20793 for Design & Construction and AFSPCMAN
    91-710V3 for Range Safety.
  • Experience working with external vendors and contractors to develop and qualify battery designs for space applications.
  • Ability to perform complex safety analyses, including failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) and fault tree analysis (FTA) for space systems.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with battery material design and development including process tracking and performance/safety characterization with emphasis on lithium ion and lithium polymer battery cells.
  • Familiarity with production processes, test equipment, procedures, standards and certified agency requirements applicable to rechargeable lithium battery products.
  • Experience with applying quality tools to the production of lithium batteries including statistical analysis of performance results, process capabilities and design of experiments.
  • Understanding of other battery technology and related safety concerns for space flight.
  • Experience with ISO/AS9100 and NASA Safety Standard NASA-STD-8719.12.
  • Understanding of Material Review Board / Root Cause Corrective Action processes.
Work Location
  • This position offers a hybrid work schedule with three days on-site and two days telework.
  • This position may require some travel.
Background Investigation Required

  • Regular attendance in accordance with an established work schedule is critical.
  • Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.
