Overview
The MTNA Rainsville Plant is seeking a 1st shift Mold Maturation Engineer. The Mold Maturation Engineer plays a critical role in the development and industrialization of injection molds for automotive components. This position leads the end-to-end process of mold qualification, from initial trials through to production readiness, ensuring tooling performance aligns with automotive quality, cost, and timing standards. The engineer collaborates with cross-functional teams including design, tooling suppliers, quality, and production to deliver high-quality molded parts that meet rigorous Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) requirements.
Key Responsibilities- Lead mold maturation activities for new and modified injection tools for automotive parts (interior, exterior, under-the-hood, etc.).
- Oversee all mold trials (T0 through SOP), analyze results, and drive corrective actions.
- Evaluate tool performance with respect to cycle time, part quality, dimensional accuracy, and mold robustness.
- Interface with toolmakers globally to ensure tooling is built and modified to specification and timeline.
- Conduct root cause analysis of molding defects (e.g., warpage, sink marks, flash, short shots) and implement permanent corrective actions.
- Use mold flow analysis and simulation data to optimize part design and mold performance.
- Collaborate with Quality and Metrology teams to validate part dimensions using CMM, laser scan, and other techniques.
- Maintain full documentation of mold changes, validation reports, and lessons learned.
- Ensure tooling meets automotive standards including OEM specifications and internal validation criteria.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Tooling Engineering, Plastics Engineering, or relative experience
- Proficiency in interpreting CAD drawings, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), and tolerancing standards.
- Familiar with statistical process control (SPC), process capability analysis, and dimensional inspection tools.
- Knowledge of automotive product development processes
- Ability to manage multiple projects with tight timelines across global suppliers.
- Willingness to travel to tool shops, suppliers, and plant locations as needed.
- 3–5 years of experience in mold development or plastic injection molding, preferably in automotive.
- Strong understanding of injection molding process and plastic part behavior.
- Hands-on experience with mold flow simulation software (e.g., Moldflow, Moldex3D).
- Experience with OEM or Tier-1 supplier programs.
- Familiarity with plastic part validation requirements
