Piping & Mechanical Engineer IV

Responsibilities

• Familiarity with department design and drafting standards.
• Familiarity with project scope, specifications, and design criteria when assigned to a project task team.
• On‑site assistance during startup.
• Perform engineering activities such as stress analysis, construction specifications, material procurement specifications, calculations, and piping estimates.
• Develop conceptual layouts and cost studies to determine the simplest, most efficient solution.
• Produce estimate-level preliminary designs and material take-offs appropriate to the estimate level.
• Produce detailed design calculations and sketches for project construction materials.
• Assist the drafting group in resolving routine layout and detailing problems.
• Provide sufficient sketches and details for completion of engineering drawings.
• Consult with design leaders from other disciplines to ensure smooth flow of critical information for scheduled project completion.
• Review and check vendor and other discipline drawings for mechanical input.
• Ensure designs use construction materials efficiently with an emphasis on ease of construction and client satisfaction.
• Check calculations made by other engineers to ensure accuracy, conformance to codes, specifications, design criteria, and good engineering practice.
• Advises the senior engineer on design or scope changes.
• Assist other engineers in developing scope, drawings, and specifications into a package for mechanical purchase inquiries, equipment, materials, or subcontract pricing.
• Develop construction specifications.
• Review fabrication drawings and construction submittals for conformance to engineering drawings and specifications.
• Perform fieldwork to gather data, check tie‑ins, and provide construction support.
• Provide technical guidance to less experienced drafting and engineering personnel.
• Recognize and communicate scope and design changes promptly.
• Coordinate work activities with teammates and the discipline lead.
• Apply advanced engineering techniques and analysis to complex designs.
• Estimate and schedule professional service hours, and assess progress and quality of mechanical work.
• Provide leadership to ensure communication and execution of work within scope, schedule, and budget.

• Bachelor or Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university is required.
• Professional Engineering registration is highly preferred.
• Six or more years of relevant industrial mechanical engineering experience.
• Knowledge of design standards and codes.
• Knowledge and application of materials and their specifications.
• Development of piping material and procurement specifications.
• Experience sizing and flexibly analyzing all piping systems, including compressible fluid piping.
• Ability to specify and select piping specialty items, safety valves, steam traps, and liquid drainers.
• Design of complex process and utility systems, including HVAC (airside and waterside).
• Knowledge of manual valve sizing, use, and application.
• Knowledge of piping supports, restraints, and installation methods.
• Ability to coordinate with other disciplines and deliverables for design integration.
• Understanding of schedule constraints and information requirements for mechanical deliverables.
• Ability to estimate mechanical/piping construction quantities from conceptual documents.
• Capability to develop construction cost estimates, detailed engineering schedules, and man‑hour budgets.
• Application of company engineering design and CAD drafting standards.
• Leadership of a small team to deliver on commitments.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong presentation skills.
• Virtual team collaboration and cross‑divisional relationship building.
