Summary

Performs research and development testing and analysis of new engines and/or components and design improvements of existing equipment, determines characteristics of an engine, engine components, or end item equipment and is responsible for validity of test results and instrumentation used in tests.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Works within the team and with the team’s stakeholders to achieve the objectives of the engine test and development department.
  • Assembles engines by special instructions from engineering personnel. This includes building the engine from machined parts, inspecting these parts both visually and dimensionally when necessary, making minor changes to the machining as required, and checking fits of all mating parts to one another.
  • Installs engines on dynamo meters, propeller test stands, or special bench test stands. This will include coordinating the fabrication of engine installation parts such as mount legs, operating controls, baffles, and cooling shrouds.
  • Assembles and installs special instrumentation per test plans. This includes all standard engine instrumentation and special instrumentation required for certain tests.
  • Operates dynamo meters, propeller test stands, or special bench test stands.
  • Ensures test plans are executed as written and requested test data is collected.

When necessary, develops test methodologies and approaches to accomplish the intended purpose of the test plan.

  • Conducts the mechanical work pertaining to the test, such as, but not limited to, honing cylinders, grinding valves and valve seats, machining of parts, burring crankcases to obtain clearances, build special test fixtures, measure parts as necessary, repair parts by welding or brazing, disassembly and repair of special test equipment, change carburetor or injector calibration, change any part or special test component as required, determine and repair any engine malfunction.
  • Supervises the writing of inspection reports covering results of tests. This includes the visual inspection and write up on engine parts after testing as determined necessary. This will also include dimensional inspections that are required.
Non-essential Duties
  • Maintains test engine and spare parts storage.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift 45 pounds.
  • Ability to traverse the shop floor.
Education and/or Experience

One year certificate from college or technical school; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination or education and experience.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules; operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and corresponded. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organizations.
