Responsibilities

The Senior Director of Hospital-Based Services serves as the enterprise administrative and financial business partner for assigned hospital-based departments, including but not limited to Emergency Medicine, Anesthesiology, Radiology, Pathology, and other facility-dependent clinical services. This role provides strategic operational leadership, financial stewardship, and performance accountability across multiple departments and Directors of Operations (DOs), ensuring that departmental leadership executes in good faith the strategic direction established by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chief Physician Executive (CPE).

The Senior Director does not replace or supersede the authority of the Department Chair or Medical Director, but instead functions as the Physician’s primary administrative counterpart—holding Physician leaders accountable for delivering clinically appropriate, operationally sound, and fiscally responsible services aligned with health system priorities. The Senior Director reports to the Administrator of the Physician Practices, the administrative partner to the CPE.

Serve as the primary administrative business partner to assigned Department Physician Leaders and Division Leaders. Partner with physicians to translate CEO/CPE strategic priorities into executable operational plans. Hold physicians accountable for appropriate service scope and access to meet patient and system needs, financial stewardship and resource utilization, alignment with enterprise clinical, quality, regulatory, and academic expectations. Ensure departmental execution aligns with enterprise strategy, escalation pathways, and governance norms.

Serve as a trusted advisor to the CPE and Administrator on departmental performance, risks, and opportunities. Provide direct supervisory oversight for multiple departmental Directors of Operations. Hold DOs accountable for day-to-day operational execution, financial discipline and budget adherence, performance management, workforce planning, and operational reliability, coach and develop DOs as senior operational leaders capable. Standardize expectations, reporting, and performance management across departments.

Maintain enterprise-level financial oversight for assigned departments, including budget development and variance management, cost-benefit and scenario modeling, productivity, efficiency, and margin analysis, present actionable performance data to physicians, CPE, and health system leadership to support decision-making. Partner with Chairs and Physician Leaders to identify and execute sustainable improvement opportunities without compromising clinical quality or mission. Ensure responsible use of staffing models, technology, space, and vendor contracts.

Ensure hospital-based services are operationally integrated across all care environments, including inpatient units, procedural areas, perioperative services, emergency departments, and outpatient locations where applicable. Act as a liaison between facility operations and physician practices to ensure seamless service delivery. Collaborate with nursing, hospital operations, and ancillary leaders to address cross-departmental dependencies. Maintain executive-level oversight of quality, safety, and regulatory performance for assigned departments.

Ensure DOs and departmental leadership meet institutional, state, and federal regulatory standards. Partner with Physician Leaders to address safety events, performance gaps, and compliance risks. Reinforce a culture of accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement.…
