Position: SA ASSESSMENT SPECIALIST

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Substance Abuse Clinical Director, the Substance Abuse Assessment Specialist conducts thorough intake interviews and screenings to determine applicants’ primary diagnosis and eligibility for substance use treatment.

This position coordinates the admission of eligible clients into Franklin Primary Health Center’s substance abuse treatment program and coordinates referrals to other certified agencies for individuals who are not appropriate for Franklin Primary programs. The Assessment Specialist also ensures that client selection and admission comply with Alabama Department of Mental Health requirements and assists with the equitable management of counselor caseloads.

Functions
  • Conduct intake interviews and screening assessments to determine eligibility for substance abuse treatment.
  • Complete cursory evaluations prior to client admission in accordance with admission and readmission policies.
  • Prepare Adult Placement Assessments.
  • Enter and maintain client information throughout the admission process.
  • Maintain the security, accuracy, and completeness of client files and case records.
  • Develop initial treatment plans and recommend appropriate internal and external programs.
  • Collaborate with treatment team members and outside agencies in the delivery of clinical services.
  • Assist clients with required paperwork, including problems, goals, objectives, and interventions.
  • Complete orientation documentation and obtain release-of-information forms when appropriate.
  • Serve as a liaison with outside agencies and coordinate referrals to appropriate programs.
  • Provide crisis intervention counseling for walk-in clients and families and identify appropriate resources for referral.
  • Recognize crisis situations and utilize appropriate de-escalation and resolution techniques.
  • Prepare and maintain statistical records regarding interviews, admissions, and program participation.
  • Complete and submit quarterly interim services reports to the Alabama Department of Mental Health (ADMH).
  • May conduct individual substance abuse counseling sessions.
  • Utilize evidence-based counseling techniques, including motivational interviewing, 12-Step counseling, and cognitive therapy techniques.
  • Participate in staff meetings, clinical meetings, training, and ongoing supervision.
  • Assist the Clinical Director with case plan reviews, authorizations, and counselor training as requested.
  • Ensure appropriate delivery and documentation of clinical services.
  • Provide services in accordance with the current ADMH Substance Abuse Services Billing Manual.

Education and Experience

Qualified candidates must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be licensed in the state as a Professional Counselor, Graduate Level Social Worker, Psychiatric Clinical Nurse Specialist, Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, Marriage and Family Therapist, Clinical Psychologist, Physician Assistant, or Physician;
    or
  • Possess at minimum a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in psychology, social work, counseling, or another behavioral health field with coursework equivalent to a degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or psychiatric nursing, and have successfully completed a clinical practicum; and/or possess an applicable substance abuse counselor certification credential.

Applicable substance abuse counselor certification must be obtained within thirty (30) months of the date of hire, as required.
