Job Summary:

The Waisman Center is dedicated to the advancement of knowledge about human development, developmental disabilities, and neurodegenerative diseases throughout the lifespan. One of 15 centers of its kind in the United States, the Waisman Center encompasses laboratories for biomedical and behavioral research, several scientific research cores, and a clinical biomanufacturing facility for the production of pharmaceuticals for early stage human clinical trials.

In addition to its research efforts, the Center provides an array of services to people with developmental disabilities, offers numerous educational and outreach programs to young children and their families, and trains scientists and clinicians who will serve our nation in the future.

This position will work within the Community TIES, Community Outreach Wisconsin operational area. Community TIES is a Community Outreach Wisconsin (COW) behavioral support program serving children and families, adolescents and adults with developmental disabilities who live in the community. This position will provide behavioral consultations to children and adults with intellectual developmental disabilities (IDD) and will use therapeutic techniques to assure client’s continued participation in community life.

This position may also provide consultations and training statewide on a limited basis.

Community Outreach Wisconsin is part of the Waisman Center’s University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD). The mission of the UCEDD is to support the full inclusion and self-determination of people with developmental disabilities and their families through: development of personnel qualified to provide services in the health, education and social service systems; provision of ser‑vices, technical assistance and the dissemination of information;

and the contribution of new knowledge about the causes and prevention of developmental disabilities, the impact of disabilities on individuals and families, and the efficacy of assessment, intervention and support methods.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Create and present trainings for community members and caregivers related to individuals with disabilities

  • Assists in providing rehabilitation counselor instruction to students and interns

  • Assesses patients, determines appropriate treatment, and creates specialized treatment plans to develop coping skills, modify behavior, and increase independence

  • Updates patient records with treatment plans and progress, and reports noticeable changes in client behavior to personnel in accordance with departmental and agency guidelines

  • Represents rehabilitation service programs among community agencies to raise awareness of services and coordinate patient treatment across specialties

  • Contributes to core functions of the University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD), including activities of training/teaching, conducting research, disseminating evidence and best practices, and demonstrating model services.

Compensation:

$53,514 minimum;

Required Qualifications:
  • Three years of experience in providing support to people with intellectual/developmental disabilities (IDD) in community settings. Undergraduate or graduate student work experience will be considered.
