• Practices family‑centered nursing according to policies and the Nurse Practice Act.
• Serves as charge nurse when assigned.
• Supervises, plans, evaluates, and coordinates patient care provided by other licensed and non‑licensed staff.
• Demonstrates CPR according to American Heart Association standards.
• Enforces compliance requirements and policies in an ethical manner consistent with the organization s values; adheres to hospital policies including confidentiality.
• Works the assigned schedule including overtime and call as required.
• Acts as preceptor for new employees and nursing students.
• Uses the nursing process to assess the patient, plan individualized care, identify expected outcomes, implement and evaluate nursing interventions for patients and families.
• Performs therapeutic procedures and assists with diagnostic procedures needed for patient care.
• Administers medications including controlled substances by all routes; administers blood and blood products.
• Responds appropriately to emergency patient situations.
• Performs activities of daily living and basic life support; manages arrest situations.
• Requires minimal supervision to safely perform patient care; can state purpose, rationale, precautions, and observations when performing skilled procedures.
• Utilizes proper body mechanics when moving, positioning, and transferring patients and moving equipment as needed for safety and function.
• Provides patient and family education by planning, coordinating, and delegating educational needs; documentation is complete.
• Utilizes the hospital information system via a computer/terminal; maintains accurate medical records using appropriate documentation tools and procedures.
• Maintains and communicates with physicians, patients, families, and the healthcare team in person and by telephone; responds to overhead pages.
• Completes unit records and required documentation (e.g., MAR, pain assessment tools, flow charts) within unit time frames.
• Supervises, evaluates, and finalizes patient care records; transcribes physician orders as required.
• Demonstrates cooperative teamwork, supports others, and completes mandatory unit, educational, and hospital requirements.
• Uses cost‑effective practices in performing all aspects of the job.
• Provides competent patient care to adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients.
• As Charge Nurse, identifies, organizes, and directs activities to optimize resources and meet patient and staff needs.
• Communicates with the Nurse Manager and Nurse Administrator about unit status, patient issues, staffing, quality management, and other evolving events; serves as first line in problem resolution with other departments and patient complaints.
• Assists with shift duty assignments or serves as a staff nurse as needed; verifies emergency equipment functionality.
• Participates on committees and in Performance Improvement activities, including iCARE, as assigned.
• Completes all mandatory department, educational, and hospital requirements; adheres to infection control and safety standards; maintains regular and prompt attendance; available to work defined schedule and overtime as required.
• Performs other related duties as assigned or reassigned to other units.

Employees must be in a regular position, working 20 hours or more per week (0.50 FTE or greater) to qualify for benefits.

• Graduation from an accredited school of nursing (Required).
• RN – Registered Nurse – State licensure and/or Compact State licensure per the Nurse Licensure Compact for Alabama (Upon Hire Required).
• Basic Life Support (BLS) – American Heart Association (Upon Hire Required).
• A comparable combination of education and experience may substitute for the above requirements.
