Responsibilities
  • Perform all aspects of care within the nursing scope of practice per the Alabama Board of Nursing
  • Consults and collaborates with physicians, anesthesia providers, and the interdisciplinary healthcare team to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualized patient care throughout the endoscopic procedure.
  • Prepares the endoscopy procedure room by ensuring all necessary equipment, supplies, medications, and endoscopic instruments are available, functional, and ready for use.
  • Promotes patient safety by actively participating in the procedural verification process, including the pre-procedure  time out,  in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Assists with patient positioning using appropriate safety measures and positioning devices to ensure patient comfort, access for the procedure, and prevention of injury.
  • Assists the physician during diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures by anticipating procedural needs, managing instruments and accessories, administering medications within scope of practice, and monitoring the sterile field as applicable.
  • Properly labels, handles, documents, and transports specimens according to organizational policy and regulatory requirements.
  • Continuously monitors the patient's physiological status throughout the procedure, recognizing and responding promptly to changes in condition and emergency situations according to established protocols.
  • Serves as the communication liaison between the patient, family members, physicians, anesthesia providers, and other members of the healthcare team.
  • Documents patient assessments, medications, procedural events, interventions, specimens, patient responses, and discharge information accurately, completely, and in a timely manner within the electronic medical record.
  • Inspects, operates, and troubleshoots endoscopic equipment and accessories to ensure proper function and collaborates with appropriate personnel when equipment issues arise.
  • Performs bedside pre-procedure and post-procedure patient assessments, provides patient education, and reinforces discharge instructions to patients and caregivers.
  • Adheres to all infection prevention, high-level disinfection, safety, and regulatory standards governing endoscopic practice.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives, competency validation, orientation, and ongoing education of endoscopy staff.
  • Assists with stocking, inventory management, and maintaining adequate supplies and equipment within the Endoscopy Department.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to support the efficient operation of the Endoscopy Department and delivery of safe, high-quality patient care.

  • Maintains professional growth and development through an ongoing process of formal and informal education
  • Communicates and uses appropriate customer relation skills with physicians, patients, families and healthcare team in person and via telephone
  • Timely, consistent, and accurate handoffs to subsequent caregivers
  • Responds to overhead pages
  • Accepts and completes all duties positively and without conflict
  • Cooperates, helps others and improves the performance of the unit
  • Completes all mandatory unit, educational and hospital requirements
  • Utilizes cost effective practices in performing all aspects of the job
  • Completes all mandatory department, educational, and hospital requirements
  • Adheres to current infection control and safety standards
  • Regular and prompt attendance
  • Ability to work scheudle as defined and overtime as required
  • Related duties as assigned
Additional Information

Employees must be in a regular position, working 20 hours or more per week (.50 FTE or greater) to qualify for benefits.

Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing meeting the minimum standards set by the State of Alabama Required
  • ACLS
    - Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support within 60 Days Required
  • BCLS
    - Basic Life Support Upon Hire Required
  • RN
    - Registered Nurse
    - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) for Alabama Upon Hire Required
  • PALS
    - Pediatric Advanced Life Support within 60 Days Required
  • Comparable combination of education and experience may substitute foe the above requirements
