Bachelor’s degree in anthropology or directly related field from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama, four years of archaeological fieldwork experience, and possession of a valid driver’s license and maintenance of a driving record sufficient to maintain insurance coverage with the University of South Alabama.

The University of South Alabama’s Center for Archaeological Studies is seeking to hire an Archaeologist IV.

• Conducts high level physical activity fieldwork for archaeological survey and excavation projects using hand tools (i.e. shovels and trowels), as well as GPS units.
• Takes detailed notes and records by photography and measured drawings.
• Conducts laboratory activities to include washing, sorting, identifying, and cataloging artifacts, data entry, and other processing and basic analysis of collections for permanent curation.
• Writes reports to include technical descriptions meeting state standards and using GIS software to generate maps.
• Supervises lower-level staff to include assigning duties, providing guidance/instruction, checking work, and preparing schedules.
• Works with CAS Director to identify and seek new projects and write proposals.
• Drives University vehicles to and from work locations.
• Carries out archaeological field surveys, testing and excavation.
• Performs laboratory processing and artifact analysis.
• Writes reports and proposals; performs archaeological field work to include excavation with hand tools, mapping, drafting, surveying, and photography using applicable equipment.
• Processes soil through a dry screen, wet screen, and flotation equipment.
• Analyzes artifacts through laboratory processing including washing, sorting, and recording measurements of excavated artifacts, observing through a microscope, preserving specimens, and performing special analyses.
• Drafts reports of findings using a PC.
• Performs archival and library research.
• Travels to various job sites using a university vehicle.
• Supervises lower level staff to include assigning duties, checking work and preparing schedules.
• Regular and prompt attendance.
• Ability to work schedule as defined and overtime hours as required.
• Related duties as assigned.
