Responsibilities
  • This is skilled mechanical work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.
  • An employee in a position allocated to this classification is responsible for performing skilled work which involves installing and repairing refrigeration and air conditioning equipment according to blueprints and schematic drawings
  • Assembling structural and functional components
  • Performing preventive maintenance on refrigeration and air conditioning equipment
  • Work is performed under the general supervision of a technical superior and is reviewed upon completion for conformance with established standards and procedures
  • Maintains and operates varied makes of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems
  • Troubleshoots and repairs electronic and pneumatic control systems
  • Repairs hot water, chill water, and steam systems to include boilers, chillers, pumps, motors, valves and other auxiliary equipment
  • Performs preventative maintenance on HVAC equipment
  • Utilizes test equipment to include volt/amp/ohms meter, temperature pressure gauges for refrigerant systems and others
  • Utilizes appropriate hand and power tools for repair and installation of equipment
  • Uses University vehicle to travel between work sites
  • Moves items weighing up to 5O lbs.
  • Climbs ladders to access work areas
  • Works in closed areas of extreme hot or cold temperatures

    Distinguishes color coded wiring
  • Reads blueprints and schematics to determine location, size, capacity and types of components needed to repair equipment and/or systems
  • Regular and prompt attendance
  • Ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required
  • Related duties as required.
  • Completes all mandatory department, educational and hospital requirements
  • Adheres to current Infection Control and Safety Standards

Additional Information

Employees must be in a regular position, working 20 hours or more per week (.50 FTE or greater) to qualify for benefits.

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent and 4 years in the operation and maintenance of HVAC systems, possession of Refrigerant Transition and Recovery certification, and possession of a valid driver’s license and maintenance of a driving record sufficient to maintain insurance coverage under the University of South Alabama Required
  • Successful completion of a program of study in HVAC at an accredited vocational/technical school may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required experience Required
  • Comparable combination of education and experience may substitute for the above requirements.
