Welder Fitter Vessel

• Fit and weld steel components for Site Services to support Production.
• Maintain jigs and other fixtures on site.
• Fit and weld keel stands, cradles, and other assemblies to support launch activities.
• Perform basic carpentry work.
• Level and block jigs to support construction of the vessel.
• Maintain safe work practices, adhere to safety policies and procedures, and carry out tasks to the highest standards.
• Ensure correct construction procedures are adhered to in compliance with Austal USA or industry standards and specifications.
• Maintain housekeeping; keep worksite free of rubbish, materials and equipment stowed orderly.
• Conserve waste of consumables and other material.
• Accountable for completion of daily work assignments.
• Assist or work with Production and Site Services employees.
• Monitor the working environment for compliance with quality, safety, environmental and health regulations and report deficiencies to supervisor.
• Support all other Site Services activities as required, including moving equipment, material, furniture, cleaning the site, cleaning the vessel, lawn and landscaping services, etc.
• Provide assistance as directed during launching, mooring, loading and departure of vessels.
• Perform other duties as assigned by management.
• Follow Austal’s employee handbook, general guidelines, company procedures and policies.

• Required:
• Five (5) years’ experience fitting or welding steel.
• AWS Certified D1.1.
• Previous shipyard experience.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide.
• Ability to measure using metric and English systems.
• Ability to receive and carry out verbal and written instructions.
• Ability to work as part of a team and within assigned roles.
• Preferred:
  Experience with ship launching and blocking.

Familiar with use and function of power, hand tools and welding machines.

• Must be able to tour all vessels and work sites.
• Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk or hear.
• Occasionally required to sit.
• Must have ability to bend, squat, stoop, crawl, and kneel.
• Perform prolonged standing.
• Ability to turn head from side to side and about the vertical axis.
• Ability to turn body at the waist from side to side and about the vertical axis.
• Lift/push/pull 50-75 lbs occasionally.
• Lift/push/pull up to 20 lbs frequently.
• Ability to climb safely (stairs, scaffolding, ladders, ramps).
• Work at heights above 12' from ladders, scaffolding, or man lifts.
• Work at various levels (waist, eye, overhead).
• Safely use tools and equipment.
• Maintain balance on uneven surfaces; maneuver obstacles.
• Strong hand grip and coordination to carry and operate tools and equipment.
• Use PPE per OSHA (hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toe shoes, goggles, respirator, harness, safety line, flotation gear, etc.).
• Withstand temperature extremes (cold and hot).
• Enter 18" x 36" openings and work in confined spaces for prolonged periods.
• Respond to verbal and audible commands.
• Utilize visual skills.
• Fully extend arm for overhead, side, front, and down reach.
• Perceive attributes of objects or materials (size, shape, temperature, texture) via hand/finger receptors.

The work environment includes humid conditions, bright flashing lights, moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, outside weather, extreme heat and cold, occasionally fumes or airborne particles at or below PEL, toxic or caustic chemicals, high noise levels usually above 90 dB.
