Reports to:

Fabrication Supervisor. Supervises:
None.

Responsibilities
  • Understand directions and follow instructions.
  • Accountable for completion of daily work assignments including completion and signatures for work completion and quality.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization on assigned job sites.
  • Perform grinding and joint preparation that meet the criteria for NDE and all visual inspection processes.
  • Monitor working environment for compliance with quality, safety, environmental and health regulations.
  • Willing to work with and train lower-skilled workers.
  • May be assigned to work any shift and tasks including outside the craft as required.

Qualifications / Knowledge / Experience
  • Minimum 6 months experience as a Trades Assistant at Austal or 1 year related experience in a similar industry.
  • Completion of an Austal approved AIDT training course may be accepted in lieu of listed experience or may be required.
  • Must pass the GMAW Aluminum ‘B’ Class and/or an FCAW Steel ‘B’ Weld Certification and approved B Class pre-employment mock weld test.
  • Performs the approved WPQT’s under limited supervision.
  • Must be able to perform grinding along with arc gouging and back gouging of steel welds through mechanical, flame, and ARC gouging processes, joint preparation for NDE and all other visual inspection processes.
  • Must be able to demonstrate the safe and effective use of craft-related tools and equipment (examples include milling discs, cutting torches, arc gougers, plate magnets, general fitting aids, sanders, grinders, burr motors, band saws, skill saws, sawzall, come along and chain falls).
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; write simple correspondence; perform basic arithmetic; and measure using the metric system.
  • Two years of maritime experience.
  • Ability to work any shift or overtime as required by management; schedule must be flexible.
Tools

Tools as directed by supervisor: milling discs, cutting torches, arc gougers, plate magnets, general fitting aids, sanders, grinders, burr motors, band saws, skill saws, sawzall, come along and chain falls, etc.

Work Environment & Physical Demands
  • The physical demands described are representative of those required to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Must be able to tour all vessels and work sites; regularly stand, walk, use hands, reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; occasionally sit.
  • Lift/push/pull 50–75 lbs occasionally; up to 20 lbs frequently.
  • Work at heights above 12 ft; work in confined spaces (18" x 36").
  • Use required PPE safely per OSHA standards; tolerate temperature variations; work with tools and equipment; possess good balance on uneven surfaces.
Work Environment
  • Regular exposure to humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, outdoor conditions, and extreme heat.
  • Occasional exposure to fumes/airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, heat and cold; noise level typically very loud.
