Part‑Time Instructor of Chemistry – School of Science, Engineering and Mathematics – Modesto Junior College (2025‑2026)
Scope of AssignmentThe successful candidate will join a chemistry department that continues to create curriculum responsive to student needs, increasing student completion through the implementation of strategies geared to increase student equity.
Minimum Qualifications- Master’s in chemistry OR Bachelor’s in chemistry or biochemistry AND Master’s in biochemistry, chemical engineering, chemical physics, physics, molecular biology or geochemistry OR the equivalent.
- Knowledge of and ability to appraise the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
- Sensitivity to the needs, problems and challenges associated with the diversity of the community college student population.
- Education and/or experience in teaching chemistry at the community college level, with a particular emphasis on basic skills.
- Current knowledge of general chemistry and organic chemistry.
- Current understanding of assessment processes for improving student success at the course, program, and degree level.
- Competence in new pedagogies such as active, student‑centered learning using emerging technology (VR/AR, digital platforms, AI, data analytics).
- Recent experience working with African American/Black, Hispanic, Native American, and other minority students.
- Willingness to examine and remediate instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support minority students.
- Experience with addressing issues of equity and culturally responsive teaching in chemistry.
- Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps within coursework and the classroom.
- Knowledge of the Hispanic‑Serving designation and related institutional practices.
- Mobility
: ability to sit or stand for long periods, move about an office, and reach above and below desk level. - Dexterity
: fine manipulation sufficient to operate a keyboard, handle individual papers, write and take notes. - Lifting
: occasional lifting of papers, files, equipment and material weighing up to 25 pounds. - Visual Requirements
: close vision sufficient to read files, documents, and computer screens and do close‑up work; ability to adjust focus frequently. - Hearing/Talking
: ability to hear normal speech, speak and hear on the telephone, and speak in person. - Emotional/Psychological Factors
: ability to make decisions and concentrate; frequent contact with others including some public contact; frequent deadlines and time‑limited assignments.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Teach chemistry courses (may include online, evening, and/or Saturday sessions).
- Develop and revise curriculum that addresses student needs and equity.
- Implement assessment processes to improve student success.
- Employ active, student‑centered learning techniques with emerging technology.
- Support and engage minority students and foster an inclusive classroom environment.
- Address equity gaps within coursework and classroom practices.

Employment Conditions- Hourly range: $78.15 to $124.94 (Doctorate range: $92.09 to $128.22).
- Part‑time faculty office hours paid at a flat rate of $30 per hour.
- Not eligible for district benefit programs except Workers’ Compensation.
A background investigation, including reference checks and a state criminal history report, is required before employment begins. Candidates will be responsible for the cost of the criminal history report. Official (sealed) transcripts and evaluations for foreign degrees must be submitted at the time of hire.
