The Librarian III is an integral member of the Library Senior Leadership team working independently and is responsible for the effective operation of the Salida Library under the direction of a Library Operations Manager.
The incumbent may be required to work evening and weekend hours. All libraries in Stanislaus County are currently closed on Sundays. There are thirteen library branches within Stanislaus County (Ceres, Denair, Empire, Hughson, Keyes, Modesto, Newman, Oakdale, Patterson, Riverbank, Salida, Turlock, and Waterford). The Modesto Library will be closed for renovation from November 30, 2024, and is anticipated to open Summer 2026.
The Keyes Library will be closed for renovation from March 6, 2026, and is anticipated to open December 2026.
- Provide excellent reference, referral, and readers’ advisory services
- Develop and implement programming
- Implement and promote system-wide programs and services
- Attend outreach and community events
- Maintain an attractive and useful print collection
- Support system-wide collection development as assigned
- Supervise Librarian I/II and Library Assistants
- Participate in selection, training, and evaluation of new/current staff
- Recruit, select, train, and supervise volunteers
- Review and approve weekly timesheets
- Develop weekly desk schedules and arrange substitutes as needed
- Regularly inspect the condition of the building and grounds
- Conduct safety and other inspections as required
- Coordinate with management on building maintenance needs
- Submit maintenance work orders
- Attend monthly Municipal Advisory Council meetings
- Attend regular Friends of the Library meetings and serve as liaison
- Identify community stakeholders and engage in partnership development
- Collect and report branch statistics as required
- Cash handling, including preparation of bank deposits
- Incident reports, On-the-Job (OJI) reports, etc. as needed
- Preparation of annual branch budget
- Attend Senior Leadership meetings and recommend library policy
- Attend All Staff and Branch Supervisor meetings and brief Salida staff on items discussed
- Participate in regional and/or system wide committees
- Act as the Program Manager for the Salida Library Passport Program
- Act as the program manager for the Book Club in a Box program
- Participate in the establishment of long-range goals, plans, and objectives of the library.
- Public library purposes, principles, organization, and the procedures and techniques to implement them;
- Principles of supervision and training.
- Supervise, train, coordinate and evaluate the work performed by professional/clerical staff;
- Plan, develop, implement and maintain programs and policies of assigned work section;
- Interpret library policies and procedures and apply them with good judgement;
- Prepare budget recommendations on the basis of past and projected needs for staff, equipment and supplies;
- Administer given budget throughout the year;
- Prepare and deliver written and verbal presentations before various groups;
- Make independent decisions while working without direct supervision;
- Understand written and oral instructions;
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with officials, employees, and the general public;
- Maintain smooth operation and workflow;
- Keep informed on current trends in literature and library techniques.
- A Master’s degree in Library Science from an educational institute accredited by the American Library Association;
- Two (2) years of experience as a professional Librarian in a library. One (1) year of which must have been at the equivalent of a Librarian II.
- One (1) of the two (2) years as a professional Librarian must be supervisory experience.
- Two (2) years of experience as a professional Librarian in a public library. One (1) year of which must have been at the equivalent of a Librarian II.
