Part‑Time Instructor of Mathematics – Arts, Science and Human Performance – Columbia College
Columbia College is looking for a part‑time faculty member in Mathematics to support our diverse student population across campus, off‑campus, and online. The college serves over 4,000 students annually and is committed to equitable outcomes.
Position SummaryThis is an in‑person, on‑site assignment. The role focuses on teaching lower‑division math courses, developing curriculum responsive to student needs, and increasing student completion through an accelerated learning model.
Responsibilities- Teach lower‑division college courses in mathematics.
- Advance equitable student learning through exemplary instruction.
- Develop, maintain and update course outlines, Student Learning Outcomes, program reviews and unit plans.
- Participate in shared governance, including serving on standing committees.
- Inform students of course requirements, evaluation procedures and attendance requirements.
- Prepare and grade class assignments and examinations.
- Maintain attendance, scholastic and other records and submit them according to published policies.
- Attend department, division, and college‑wide meetings.
- Hold sufficient and regular office hours in accordance with prevailing policy.
- Implement and assess student‑learning outcomes and use results for improvement.
- Engage in data inquiry and self‑assessment to develop strategies for student success, persistence and equity.
- Collaborate on curriculum development and program review.
- Participate in professional development activities addressing disproportionate impact gaps.
- Maintain current knowledge in subject area and teaching strategies.
- Maintain professional conduct and ethics.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Master’s Degree in mathematics or applied mathematics OR a Bachelor’s degree in either of the above AND a Master’s in statistics, physics, or mathematics education OR the equivalent.
- Knowledge of and ability to appraise the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
- Sensitivity to the needs, problems and challenges associated with the community college student population.
- Proof of equivalency when qualifications are not directly met.
- Ability to develop curriculum or services that stress innovation and student equity.
- Enthusiasm for teaching and learning.
- Interest in incorporating multiple teaching methods and modalities.
- Ability to integrate technology into mathematics instruction.
- Commitment to supportive relationships with students and colleagues.
- Experience in professional growth and staying current in subject area.
- Ability to operate effectively in change and ambiguity.
- Vision and energy to plan and organize programs to enhance student success.
- Effective interpersonal communication skills and community involvement.
- Participation in shared governance and collaborative teamwork.
- Education and/or experience teaching mathematics at the community college level.
- Current knowledge of mathematics education and assessment processes.
- Competence in new pedagogies such as accelerated learning, supplemental instruction, online or hybrid teaching.
- Experience working with African American/Black, Hispanic, Native American and other minoritized students.
- Willingness to examine and remediate instructional practices for equitable outcomes.
- Experience with culturally responsive teaching in mathematics.
- Knowledge of Hispanic‑Serving designation practices.
- Strong collaboration with campus colleagues.
- Mobility: ability to sit or stand for long periods, move about an office, and reach above and below desk level.
- Dexterity: fine manipulation to operate a keyboard and handle papers.
- Lifting: occasional lifting of papers and equipment up to 25 lb.
- Visual: close vision sufficient to read files, documents, and computer screens.
- Hearing/Talking: ability to hear normal speech, speak and hear on the telephone, and speak in person.
- Emotional/Psychological: ability to make decisions, concentrate, interact with others, meet deadlines and work in a time‑limited environment.
