Part‑Time Instructor of Vocational Nursing

Position SummaryUnder the supervision of the Dean of Health Professions, the Instructor will design, deliver, and assess Vocational Nursing courses in a hybrid evening program that includes face‑to‑face labs. Responsibilities include evaluating student progress, advising on academic matters, and participating in initiatives that strengthen student success.
Key Responsibilities- Teach lower‑division and clinical Vocational Nursing courses.
- Adhere to course outlines, schedules, and institutional policies.
- Inform students of requirements, evaluation procedures, and attendance expectations.
- Prepare, grade, and provide timely feedback on assignments and examinations.
- Supervise and evaluate student clinical practice and remedial skill sessions.
- Maintain comprehensive records for clinical evaluations, grade books, competency testing, and attendance.
- Assist in scheduling and coordination of pre‑ and post‑conference meetings.
- Develop, implement, and assess course learning outcomes; use data to improve program effectiveness.
- Participate in professional development activities to meet mandatory FLEX requirements.
- Keep current with subject‑matter knowledge and effective teaching strategies, meeting diverse learning needs.
- Maintain professional conduct and ethics standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support program goals.
- Either a bachelor’s degree with two years of professional experience, or an associate degree with six years of experience.
- At least 12 months of continuous, full‑time (or equivalent) registered nurse experience providing direct patient care within the last five years.
- Current California license as a Registered Nurse or Vocational Nurse.
- Bachelor’s degree from an approved institution, or a valid teaching credential, or at least one year of full‑time teaching experience within the last five years in a California‑approved nursing or related program.
- Minimum two years of experience as a registered nurse or licensed vocational nurse within the past five years.
- Proven ability to work effectively with diverse student populations and sensitivity to equity challenges.
- Knowledge of California State Chancellor’s Office requirements for nursing faculty.
- Professional role model demonstrating ethical nursing practice.
- Effective instructional, supervisory, and evaluative skills across all aspects of Vocational Nursing.
- Team‑oriented collaboration with departmental faculty.
- Experience developing curriculum that promotes innovation and student equity.
- Enthusiasm for the learning process and commitment to student support.
- Participation in ongoing professional growth and active engagement in shared governance.
- Strong interpersonal communication and public presentation skills.
- Community‑college level teaching experience in Vocational Nursing, especially basic skills courses.
- Up‑to‑date knowledge of Vocational Nursing practices and assessment processes that drive student success.
- Competence in contemporary pedagogies that foster equity and student engagement.
- Experience working with African American/Black, Hispanic, Native American, or other minoritized students.
- Willingness to examine and refine instructional practices to better support racially minoritized students.
- Understanding of equity issues in the classroom and culturally responsive teaching strategies.
- Knowledge of the Hispanic‑Serving designation and its implications for instructional practices.
- Mobility: sit or stand for extended periods, move about an office, reach above and below desk level.
- Dexterity: fine manipulation for keyboard use, paper handling, writing, and note‑taking.
- Lifting: occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds.
- Visual: close‑up vision sufficient for reading files, documents, and computer screens.
- Hearing/Talking: normal hearing, telephone communication, and in‑person speech.
- Emotional/Psychological: decision‑making, concentration, public interaction, and meeting deadlines under time pressure.
