Part‑Time Counselor, Accommodations and Support Center – Student Services – Modesto Junior College 2025‑2026

Position Summary:

The successful candidate will join the Accommodations & Support Services department, contributing to curriculum development and student completion strategies with a focus on equity and the diverse student population of Modesto Junior College.

Hourly Rate

Hourly rate: $54.27 – $86.76 (Certificated Part‑time Non‑Instructional Schedule). Part‑time faculty office hours are paid at a flat rate of $30 per hour.

Position Summary

This role supports students with disabilities and Veterans, offering personalized academic, career, and personal counseling, verifying disabilities, maintaining accurate records, participating in governance, leading workshops, coordinating success initiatives, and collaborating across units. The position may be conducted part‑time, online, in the evening, and/or on Saturdays.

Responsibilities
  • Provide personalized academic, career, and personal counseling (face‑to‑face and/or remote) to ASC and Veterans students.
  • Verify disabilities through observation or analysis of medical and psychological documentation.
  • Stay current on degree, certificate, transfer, and ASC information; advise students and train other counselors.
  • Inform ASC students of resources, enrollment procedures, financial aid, and academic progress support.
  • Maintain and submit accurate records (grades, syllabi, attendance, ASC mandated reports).
  • Participate in district and academic senate governance processes and committees.
  • Lead group presentations, workshops, seminars, orientations, and other student‑advising functions.
  • Coordinate student success initiatives in the ASC program.
  • Serve as liaison for ASC‑related issues with academic, career technical education, student services, and faculty.
  • Support program review, development, and assessment of service area outcomes.
  • Collaborate with the Department of Rehabilitation Counselors and other campus units to ensure efficient services.
  • Implement innovative approaches to better serve students.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development related to ASC and counseling.
  • Act as a resource for the Modesto Junior College campuses regarding ASC issues.
  • Engage in other activities (e.g., community outreach) as directed by the Dean of Student Services.
  • Adhere to all district policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in counseling, guidance, student personnel, clinical or counseling psychology, etc., or the equivalence described in the original.
  • License as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) if holding a bachelor’s degree in the field or two years full‑time experience.
  • 15 or more semester units in upper‑division or graduate coursework related to people with disabilities, or six semester units of a graduate‑level counseling practicum or counseling field‑work courses, or two years of equivalent experience in counseling for students with disabilities or in related settings (industry, government, public agencies, military, or private social welfare organizations).
  • Knowledge of and ability to appraise the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, and sensitivity to their challenges.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience in community‑college‑based grant‑funded programs and/or categorical programs.
  • Competence in current professional principles, practices, and techniques for counseling.
  • Experience counseling community‑college students from traditionally disadvantaged backgrounds, students with disabilities, Veterans, and/or single parents.
  • Proficiency using available technologies and classroom assessment instruments.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach counseling courses and facilitate workshops, orientations, and seminars.
  • Ability to conduct and develop educational workshops and advisement plans, including CSU/UC applications, TAG, and advising.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of counseling approaches for students to compensate for educational limitations posed by specific disabilities.
  • Knowledge of state and federal guidelines regarding academic accommodations (ADA, 504).
