Part‑Time Instructor of Communication Studies - School of Arts, Performance, & the Humanities, Modesto Junior College )

The successful candidate will join a Communication Studies department that is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The department values diverse perspectives and strives to reduce barriers for students.

The candidate will be responsible for teaching lower division courses in Communication Studies, recruiting students and club members, and advancing equitable learning in the classroom.

• Master’s in speech, speech broadcasting, telecommunications, rhetoric, communication, communication studies, speech communication or organizational communication OR Bachelor’s in any of the above AND Master’s in drama/ theater arts, mass communication or English OR the equivalent.
• Knowledge of and ability to appraise the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
• Sanctity of California State Chancellor’s Office equivalency procedure.

• Experience teaching in a variety of modalities such as online, hybrid, HyFlex, and in‑person.
• Experience with outreach and recruitment of students, community, and career.
• Experience teaching courses such as debate, ethics in communication, group and organizational communication, forensics, oral interpretation of literature, intercultural communication, mass communication, mediated communication, organizational behavior, storytelling, or other areas of specialty in Communication Studies.
• Experience advising majors and running student organizations or clubs.
• Knowledge and willingness to use Open Educational Resources.
• Ability to develop curriculum or services that emphasize innovation and improve student equity.

• Education or experience teaching communication studies courses with emphasis on oral communication, interpersonal communication, and critical thinking at the community college level.
• Current knowledge of the discipline and emerging trends, research, and pedagogy.
• Understanding of assessment processes for improving student success.
• Competence in new pedagogies such as accelerated learning, supplemental instruction, online or hybrid teaching.
• Recent experience working with African American/Black, Hispanic, Native American, and other minoritized students.
• Willingness to examine and remediate instruction, relational, and classroom practices for effectiveness.
• Experience addressing equity issues in the classroom.
• Experience and expertise in culturally responsive teaching in communication studies.
• Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps in coursework.
• Knowledge of the Hispanic‑Serving designation for institutional, departmental, and instructional practices.

• Teach lower‑division college courses in Communication Studies, including Public Speaking, Introduction to Human Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Argumentation, or Introduction to Debate.
• Recruit for the Speech and Debate Team, Sigma Chi Eta honors society, and for the Communication Studies major.
• Advance equitable student learning through exemplary instruction aligned with course outlines.
• Communicate course requirements, evaluation procedures, and attendance requirements to students.
• Prepare and grade assignments and examinations, and inform students of their academic progress.
• Maintain attendance, scholastic, and other records and submit them according to published policies and deadlines.
