Part-Time Instructor of Philosophy – Arts, Science, and Human Performance - Columbia College

Under the supervision of the Division Dean, the successful applicant will provide lecture and/or laboratory instruction in philosophy courses, evaluate student progress, advise students on educational matters, and perform related duties as assigned.

• Teach lower-division college courses in Philosophy.
• Advance equitable student learning through exemplary instruction.
• Inform students of course requirements, evaluation procedures, and attendance requirements.
• Prepare and grade assignments and examinations, and inform students of academic progress.
• Maintain attendance, scholastic, and other records and submit them according to policies.
• Post and hold sufficient regular office hours.
• Develop, implement, and assess student‑learning outcomes for courses and programs.
• Collaborate in the development and revision of curriculum and program review.
• Participate in professional development activities and statewide initiatives.
• Engage in data inquiry and self‑assessment to develop strategies for student success, persistence, and equity.
• Participate in the college’s participatory governance processes.
• Maintain current knowledge in the subject matter area and effective teaching/learning strategies.
• Maintain professional conduct and ethics.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Master’s degree in philosophy or bachelor’s degree in philosophy plus a master’s degree in humanities or religious studies, or equivalency.
• Knowledge of and ability to appraise the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

• Ability to develop curriculum or services that stress innovation and improve student equity.
• Enthusiasm for the learning process.

• Participation in professional growth and staying current in the subject area and major state initiatives.

• Experience teaching philosophy at the community college level with an emphasis on basic skills.
• Current knowledge of philosophy and assessment processes for improving student success.
• Competence in new pedagogies such as accelerated learning, supplemental instruction, online or hybrid teaching, Universal Design, and other pedagogies that improve student success and equity.
• Recent experience working with racially minoritized students and addressing equity issues in the classroom.
• Expertise in culturally responsive teaching in philosophy.
• Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps within coursework and classroom.
• Knowledge of the Hispanic-Serving designation for institutional and instructional practices.

• Mobility: ability to sit or stand for long periods, move about an office, and reach above and below desk level.
• Dexterity: fine manipulation sufficient to operate a keyboard, handle papers, write and take notes.
• Lifting: occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds.
• Visual requirements: close vision sufficient to read files, documents, and computer screens.
• Hearing/Talking: ability to hear normal speech, speak, and use telephone.
• Emotional/Psychological factors: ability to make decisions, concentrate, and handle frequent deadlines and public contact.

• Hourly range: $78.15 to $124.94.
• Doctorate range: $92.09 to $128.22.
• Part‑time faculty office hours paid at a flat rate of $30 per hour.
• Not eligible for benefits except workers’ compensation coverage.
