Part‑Time Instructor of Art - School of Arts, Performance, & the Humanities – Modesto Junior College (2026‑2027)

Modesto Junior College seeks part‑time faculty in the Art department to educate a diverse student body. The successful candidate will work within an Ethnic Studies department focused on culturally responsive curriculum and student equity. Responsibilities include teaching, assessment, and participation in institutional initiatives to improve student success.

• Teach lower‑division college courses in Art (e.g., ceramics, design, drawing, painting, sculpture).
• Advance equitable student learning through exemplary instruction, course outlines, and classroom practices.
• Inform students of course requirements, evaluation procedures, and attendance expectations.
• Prepare, grade, and discuss assignments and examinations; inform students of academic progress.
• Maintain accurate attendance, scholarly, and other records in compliance with policies and deadlines.
• Develop, implement, and assess student‑learning outcomes for courses and programs; use results for continuous improvement.
• Engage in data‑driven inquiry and self‑assessment to develop strategies for student success, persistence, and equity.
• Participate in professional development activities to meet mandatory FLEX requirements.
• Maintain current subject‑matter knowledge and effective teaching strategies for diverse learning styles.
• Uphold professional conduct and ethics standards.

• Mobility: ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods, move about an office, and reach above and below desk level.
• Dexterity: fine manipulation to operate a keyboard, handle papers, write, and take notes.
• Lifting: occasional lifting of materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
• Visual: sufficient close vision to read files, documents, and computer screens and adjust focus frequently.
• Hearing/Talking: ability to hear normal speech, speak and hear on the telephone, and speak in person.
• Emotional/Psychological: ability to concentrate, manage frequent contact with others, meet deadlines, and operate under time‑limited assignments.

• Master’s in Fine Arts, Art, or Art History; or Bachelor’s in any of the above combined with a Master’s in Humanities or equivalent.
• Evidence of sensitivity to diversity and experience with socio‑economic, cultural, and ethnic student populations.
• Knowledge of California State Chancellor’s Office standards in awarding equivalencies.

• Experience teaching basic drawing, ceramics, 3‑D foundation design, and sculpture.
• Knowledge and willingness to use Open Educational Resources.
• Ability to develop curriculum or services that promote innovation and equity.
• Enthusiasm for the learning process and commitment to supportive relationships with students and colleagues.
• Participation in professional growth and current knowledge of state initiatives.
• Adaptability in environments of change and ambiguity.
• Vision to plan and organize programs enhancing student success.

• Teaching experience in a variety of Art courses, emphasizing ceramics, design, drawing, painting, sculpture, and community‑college‑level appreciation of art.
• Current knowledge of Art discipline, emerging trends, research, and pedagogy.
• Understanding of assessment processes to improve student success at course, program, and degree levels.
• Competency in innovative pedagogies promoting student equity and success.
• Recent experience working with African American/Black, Hispanic, Native American, and other minoritized students; awareness of historic exclusion patterns in higher education.
• Willingness to examine and remediate instructional, relational, and classroom practices for greater engagement of racially minoritized students.
• Expertise in addressing equity issues and culturally responsive teaching in art.
• Demonstrated ability to identify and address equity gaps in coursework and classroom settings.
• Knowledge of Hispanic‑Serving designation and related institutional practices.
