Sr Controls Engineer

Job Description

The Sr Controls Engineer designs, develops, and supports modern industrial automation systems with a strong focus on Ignition SCADA/HMI and Rockwell/Allen-Bradley PLC platforms. This role spans the full project lifecycle-from concept and design through development, testing, commissioning, and ongoing client support. You will work hands-on across Ignition, PLCs, and field commissioning, collaborating closely with cross-functional teams to deliver reliable, scalable automation solutions.

In addition, you will mentor junior engineers, help standardize engineering practices, and communicate clearly with stakeholders about project progress, scope changes, and technical challenges.

Responsibilities

* Design, develop, and support Ignition-based SCADA and HMI systems, primarily using Ignition 8.x with exposure to legacy 7.9 environments.

* Develop, modify, and troubleshoot PLC programs, primarily on Rockwell/Allen-Bradley Compact Logix and Control Logix platforms.

* Lead and support automation projects across the full lifecycle, including requirements definition, system design, development, testing, commissioning, and post-startup client support.

* Work across Ignition, PLCs, and field commissioning activities, adjusting responsibilities based on project and client needs.

* Perform PLC/HMI programming and systems integration for industrial applications using multiple platforms and technologies.

* Implement and support SCADA, HMI, and control system designs that meet performance, reliability, and safety requirements.

* Develop and review electrical schematics, P&IDs, flow diagrams, and related control system documentation.

* Apply UL 508A, IEEE, and NEC standards in the design and implementation of control systems.

* Utilize AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, and/or ePlan to create and update electrical and control system drawings.

* Configure and troubleshoot industrial communication networks, including Ethernet, Modbus, IO-Link, Control Net, and Device Net.

* Integrate control systems with SQL databases and other enterprise systems to support data collection, reporting, and analytics.

* Use Python and Java within Ignition and related environments to extend system functionality and automate tasks.

* Support process automation initiatives and contribute to IT/OT network convergence efforts.

* Collaborate closely with project managers, engineers, technicians, and clients to define requirements and deliver high-quality automation solutions on time.

* Mentor junior engineers by reviewing work, sharing best practices, and contributing to repeatable and scalable engineering standards.

* Communicate clearly and consistently with internal teams and clients regarding project status, technical challenges, and scope changes.

* Troubleshoot control systems, HMIs, PLCs, and associated electrical equipment to resolve issues efficiently in the field and remotely.

* Work with Rockwell Automation, Wonderware, and Inductive Automation HMI/SCADA products as needed for project requirements.

* Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering processes, templates, and standards to enhance quality and efficiency.

Essential Skills

* At least 5 years of experience as a controls engineer in an automation or systems integration environment (not limited to a single plant setting).

* At least 5 years of hands-on experience with Rockwell/Allen-Bradley PLCs, including Compact Logix and Control Logix platforms.

* At least 5 years of experience with Ignition SCADA/HMI development and support.

* Strong proficiency in PLC programming, troubleshooting, and control system design.

* Hands-on experience with Ignition versions 7.9 through 8.x for SCADA/HMI development.

* Solid understanding in automation, HMI development, and SCADA systems.

* Strong electrical engineering and electrical design knowledge related to control systems.

* Ability to read, create, and modify electrical schematics, P&IDs, and flow diagrams.

* Proficiency with AutoCAD and/or AutoCAD Electrical for control and electrical design.

* Experience with Rockwell Automation products and RSLogix or related Rockwell software tools.

* Experience with PLC/HMI programming and systems integration in industrial applications using multiple platforms.

* Working knowledge of UL 508A, IEEE, and NEC standards as they apply to control panels and electrical systems.

* Experience with industrial communication protocols such as Ethernet, Modbus, IO-Link, Control Net, and Device Net.

* Strong troubleshooting skills for PLCs, HMIs, robotics, and electrical control systems.

* Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and communicate clearly with clients.

Additional

Skills & Qualifications

* Minimum of 3 years of focused experience in Ignition development, including project design, scripting, and deployment.

* Experience with Ignition 7.9-8.3, including migration and support of legacy projects.
