Police Evidence and Property Technician I​/II

The Modesto Police Department is seeking a detail-oriented, organized, and highly responsible individual to join our team as a Police Evidence and Property Technician
. This critical role supports law enforcement operations by ensuring accurate collection, documentation, handling, and storage.

The Police Evidence and Property Technician perform administrative and technical duties associated with the acceptance, storage, control and disposal of police evidence and property; to protect the integrity of evidence throughout the judicial process; and to ensure compliance with all State and local laws regarding the storage and disposition of property and evidence.

• 2.5% Education Incentive (bachelor's degree)
• 5% Education Incentive (master's degree)

Applicants will be assessed on the application submitted. Due to the volume of applications received, resumes will not be screened for the purpose of determining who is the most qualified to compete in the testing process. It is the applicant's responsibility to fill out the "Education" and "Work Experience" sections of the application with complete information and adequate detail. Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Receive and process evidence and property, make accurate computer entries, bar-code and process items for proper storage.
• Use a variety of computer systems, resource materials, and knowledge of laws to conduct research on stolen property, to identify the disposition on cases, to find the identity and addresses of victims and suspects, and to determine the disposition of evidence in accordance with law.
• Search CLETS on serialized firearms and send out proper notifications to property owners; store firearms following appropriate procedures; prepare Notice Of Destruction notices for newspaper publication of unclaimed firearms and prepare items for destruction trips to the burn plant in compliance with department regulations and state laws.
• Assist officers and the public at front counter and over the telephone by providing and/or returning evidence; photograph items as necessary before being released to owners or Police Officers.
• Maintain records of evidence tracking to insure the integrity of the evidence for courtroom use in prosecution of offenders; testify in court regarding handling and chain-of-custody of evidence.
• Receive laboratory samples, log in accordance with the evidence tracking procedures, and take or send to the appropriate laboratory for testing; store in accordance with recommended legal guidelines.
