About the Opportunity

The Deputy Sheriff Trainee (Adult Detention) will attend the Stanislaus County Adult Detention CORE Academy and be responsible for escorting, registering, controlling, supervising, and caring for incarcerated persons. Deputies may serve at the Sheriff’s Detention Center (SDC) East and West, Minimum Housing Unit, or Re‑entry and Enhanced Alternatives to Custody Training Center (REACT). The role requires emotional stability, the ability to work in a hostile environment, sound judgment, and adherence to a “No Hostage Policy.”

Upon successful completion of the CORE Academy and background investigation, trainees will transition to a full‑time Deputy Sheriff‑Custodial.

Typical Tasks
  • Receive, book, search, attend to, and release incarcerated persons in the SDC-East and West Facilities, Minimum Housing Unit, and REACT Center
  • Maintain order and discipline among incarcerated persons
  • Type booking slips, head‑count rosters, incident reports, and other forms as required; serve civil process papers
  • Serve as a hospital guard
  • Inspect sanitation and oversee feeding of incarcerated persons
  • Supervise daily activities of the jail inmates
  • Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action quickly
  • Escort and transport inmates to/from clinic, court, hospital, and state institutions
  • Serve as storekeeper and issue daily supplies
  • Appoint and supervise trustees
  • Make arrests pursuant to Penal Code Section 831.5
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education/Experience)

Skills and Abilities

  • Read and understand police policies, instructions, laws, and ordinances
  • Write clear and comprehensive reports
  • Demonstrate physical endurance, agility, and strength; understand written and oral instructions
  • Make independent decisions
  • Handle sensitive, confidential information

Knowledge

  • Detention facility techniques and objectives
  • Principles and techniques of supervising group activities in a secure setting
  • Relevant laws, statutes, court proceedings, and regulations governing sentenced and non‑sentenced persons

Education / Experience

  • High‑school graduation or GED
  • Completion of the Stanislaus County arrest and firearms training courses and the jail operations course within 12 months of employment
  • Physical/manipulative abilities as required by the department
  • Mental/cognitive abilities as required by the department
  • Age 21 or older at appointment

Additional Requirements

  • No felony convictions; must exhibit good moral character and lack convictions leading to imprisonment in federal or state prison
General Qualifications
  • Pass county‑paid pre‑employment drug screening and background investigation
  • Perform duties ensuring a safe working environment
  • Maintain confidentiality per legal and county standards
  • Meet minimum standards for peace officers per Government Code 1031
  • Possess or be eligible for a California Peace Officer Standards and Training POE certificate (Basic/Intermediate/Advanced); decertification disqualifies candidate
  • Maintain a valid California driver’s license and insurance requirements
  • Be capable of performing essential functions involving physical labor, vision, hearing, and work in varied environments
Physical Requirements
  • Perform essential job functions: lifting, carrying, walking, running, kneeling, crouching, twisting, stooping, squatting, crawling, climbing
  • Carry average person weight (~165 lbs) and take physical charge of resisting individuals
  • Operate in extreme heat and cold, endure noise, vibrations, confined spaces, chemical hazards, explosives, mechanical and electrical hazards
  • Read or see objects under various lighting conditions at a reasonable distance
  • Hear normal speech amid environmental noise such as gunshots, cries, alarms
License
  • Maintain a valid California driver’s license; remain free from preventable accidents
