Deputy Sheriff‑Custodial personnel escort, receive, register, control, supervise, and care for incarcerated persons. Deputies may be assigned to the Sheriff’s Detention Center (East and West Facilities), Minimum Housing Unit, or the Re‑entry and Enhanced Alternatives to Custody Training Center (REACT). Deputies must be mature, emotionally stable, and able to work effectively in an environment that can be hostile, unpredictable, and sometimes unpleasant.
They must be able to direct and instruct groups of incarcerated persons; maintain a tolerant attitude toward those confined; respond to a variety of situations; exercise sound judgment; and work under a “No Hostage Policy” setting. Entry into the Deputy Sheriff‑Custodial classification offers career opportunities in custodial correction work. Deputies are peace officers pursuant to 830.1(c), with authority limited to their duties and any local state of emergency.
Tasks
- Receive, book, search, attend, and release incarcerated persons in the Jail, Honor Farm, and Public Safety Center.
- Maintain order and discipline among incarcerated persons.
- Type booking slips, head‑count rosters, incident reports, and other required forms.
- Serve civil process papers.
- Act as a hospital guard.
- Inspect sanitation and oversee the feeding of incarcerated persons.
- Supervise the daily activities of the Jail and Honor Farm incarcerated persons.
- Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action quickly.
- Escort and transport incarcerated persons to and from clinics, courts, hospitals, and state institutions.
- Act as storekeeper and issue daily supplies.
- Appoint and supervise trustees.
- Make arrests pursuant to Penal Code Section 830.1(c).
- The purposes and objectives of modern detention facility techniques.
- Principles and techniques of supervising group activities in a detention, secured setting facility.
- Laws, statutes, court proceedings, and regulations governing both sentenced and non‑sentenced incarcerated persons.
- Read and understand policies, rules, instructions, laws, and ordinances pertaining to law‑enforcement activities.
- Supervise daily activities of sentenced and non‑sentenced incarcerated persons.
- Think clearly, use good judgment, and adopt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action in emergency situations.
- Remember names, faces, incident details, and possess good observation skills.
- Apply modern principles of hygiene.
- Enforce rules and regulations fairly, with tact and impartiality.
- Type reports accurately at a reasonable speed.
- Graduate from high school or pass the high school equivalent GED test;
AND - Meet minimum standards for peace officers pursuant to Government Code Section 1031;
AND - Successfully complete the Stanislaus County arrest and firearms training courses pursuant to 832 PC (as prescribed by POST) and the jail operations course pursuant to 6035 PC within twelve months from the date of employment;
AND - Possess required physical/manipulative abilities;
AND - Possess required mental/cognitive abilities;
AND - Be of good moral character and have no convictions that could have resulted in federal or state imprisonment;
AND - Hold a valid California driver’s license;
AND - Be at least 21 years of age at appointment;
AND - Maintain or be eligible for a California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Proof of Eligibility (POE) or certificate (Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced) under SB 2. Ineligibility or decertification from POST disqualifies the candidate.
- Be currently enrolled or attending a STC‑certified Adult Correctional Officer (ACO) Academy hosted by a California Sheriff’s department.
