The Police Officer, under the supervision of a superior officer, shall be a conservator of the peace. The Police Officer shall be specifically charged with the protection of Black Hawk College and its personnel, students, visitors, properties, and interests from criminal acts, fire hazards, and safety concerns. In addition to enforcing the laws of the State of Illinois, the Police Officer will also enforce the pertinent laws of the College district and/or the city where the College owns or controls property, and the ordinances and regulations of the College.

DESCRIPTION

OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Maintains order on college property and at college functions.
  • Conducts frequent but irregular patrols of the College to prevent and detect crimes and eliminate hazards, and identifies, investigates, and reports issues that impact the safety of the institution including those conditions and situations that impact the College’s risk management function.
  • Responsible for identifying risks relating to crimes and/or suspicious activity/person on campus.
  • Responsible for selection, implementation, and monitoring of processes, systems, or decisions relating to crimes and/or suspicious activity/persons on campus.
  • Take appropriate action in dealing with violators of the law, ordinances and rules of the College.
  • Renders assistance and information to members of the College community.
  • Enforces traffic and parking regulations and directs traffic and the preliminary investigation of traffic accidents on college property.
  • Responsible for preliminary criminal investigations as required.
  • Prepares and submits written reports on all aspects of the job.
  • Responsible for inspections to ensure compliance with State and local fire regulations, and functionality of the College’s fire detection and suppression systems.
  • Responds to and takes control of emergencies to protect lives and property.
  • Responds to fire calls on campus and is responsible for the use of College issued fire equipment in attempting to control fires.
  • Obtains the assistance of the fire department and directs them to the fire as required.
  • Provides assistance to local, county, state, and federal police and fire departments as required.
  • Controls and cares for all College-issued Police equipment.
  • Responds to medical emergencies and renders first aid that is in keeping with training and experience.
  • Maintains satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record.

  • High School diploma or recognized equivalent required. Associate’s degree in law enforcement or criminal justice (or related field) preferred.
  • Certification as a Peace Officer from the Illinois Police Training and Standards Board required.
  • Two years’ experience as a sworn law enforcement official preferred.
  • Must be at least twenty-one years of age.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Must be willing to submit to and pass a background investigation and have no felony convictions.
  • Must be willing to attend and pass training as required by the department.
  • Must be in good physical condition. A physical exam may be required.
  • Must be able to read and understand the criminal code.
  • Must be bondable.
  • Must be able to write in a clear and accurate manner.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends.
