Firefighter

Responsibilities

• Respond to fire calls, emergency medical calls and other emergencies; drive and operate firefighting equipment and ambulance units; perform rescues and render medical care; conduct salvage and clean‑up operations.
• Conduct inspections of commercial and residential properties; make recommendations for fire and life safety; write correction orders for violations of fire codes; draw layout sketches of buildings; may give testimony in court involving arson cases.
• Attend training classes and activities in firefighting and emergency medical services techniques; receive training in methods of fire prevention inspection and rules and regulations.
• Perform maintenance of ambulance equipment, firefighting equipment and facilities; may perform semi‑skilled work on complex firefighting equipment apparatus.
• Participate in public information programs such as demonstrations and safety lectures for schools and organizations.
• Serve as a designated watch officer, manning telephones and fire alarms; complete activity reports.
• May be assigned to the fire prevention division or emergency medical services on a full‑time basis to assist in all fire prevention, inspection, investigation and educational activities, or emergency medical services conducted by the division.
• As the senior firefighter at the station, may serve as acting Fire Lieutenant.
• Perform other duties as required or assigned.

• Knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to four (4) years of high school.
• U.S. citizen with a valid driver’s license.
• At least 21 years of age by the date of hire and under the age of 35 before the written examination.
• IL and/or National Paramedic certification at the time employment is offered.
• EMT/Paramedic certification upon appointment.
• Successfully complete the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) with ladder climb annually, pass a written examination, background security investigation, oral examination, medical examination, and drug screening.
• Must be able to perform job demands wearing 68 lbs of equipment, tolerate extremes of weather, continuous standing, walking, climbing, bending, stooping, reaching, squatting, and heavy lifting as defined by OSHA Work Practice Guide.
• Ability to render emergency medical care, operate and maintain firefighting equipment and property, provide mobile intensive care, function effectively under emergency stress, establish effective relationships with other firefighters, meet the requirements of the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners.
• Willingness to respond to emergency situations 24 hours a day; obtain Basic Operations FF certification within the probationary period.
• Employees must live in Illinois or Iowa; possess a Class "B" Vehicle Operator's License.
• Employees who accept an overtime call‑back assignment must maintain a 45‑minute or less response time from their domicile; otherwise they may be subject to disciplinary action.
